Oliver Platt isn't the type who usually takes center stage on the poster. He's the actor who holds the movie together when the lead falters. Born in Canada in 1960, he spent his childhood moving from country to country because of his father's diplomatic career. That nomadic life gave him a finely tuned ear for accents and an almost clinical powers of observation.
After studying at Tufts University, he moved to New York to try his luck in theater.
Platt doesn't go for easy applause.
In 1988 he made his film debut in Married to the Mob. It was a low-key but effective entrance. His imposing build and deep voice helped him avoid the generic leading-man roles that were common at the time. He instead specialized in rough-edged characters, guys who often proved more interesting than the hero of the day.
The nineties were his great proving ground. In 1990 he appeared in Flatliners alongside a group of young hopefuls chasing stardom. While others tried to be the pretty face of the film, he focused on bringing the gravity a dark science fiction plot needed.
And it worked.
In 1993 he played Porthos in Disney's version of The Three Musketeers. It was a purely physical role in which he earned a salary of one million dollars for the first time. That part gave him the financial security to choose riskier projects in independent film.
Late in that decade he filmed Lake Placid (1999). Critics were not especially kind to the movie, but his performance as an eccentric mythologist became the best part of the film. Platt has a rare knack for elevating material that looks mediocre on paper.
With the arrival of the new century, movies began offering him less room for nuance. But television was changing, and he recognized the shift before many of his generation. In 2001 he joined The West Wing to play Oliver Babish.
Prestige isn't always measured in screen time.
His stint on the series Aaron Sorkin earned him an Emmy nomination. It wasn't his only one. Between 2004 and 2006, he appeared in Huff and later in The Big C (2010). In these productions, he showed he could handle medical drama and dark comedy without breaking a sweat.
Since 2015 he has played Dr. Daniel Charles in Chicago Med. It's a role that demands constant presence and a steadiness few actors of his stature willingly accept. He has surpassed 160 episodes playing the head of psychiatry on NBC's fictional hospital drama.
In 2022 he joined the cast of The Bear to play Uncle Jimmy. He is a character who serves as the financial and emotional anchor of a chaotic kitchen. His involvement with the FX series was settled with a filming agreement that prioritized his schedule in Chicago so as not to interrupt the main production of the rival network.
Oliver Platt has earned four Emmy Award nominations and one Tony nomination. His contract with Wolf Entertainment was automatically renewed after the 2023 writers' strike.
