The Fake Lip That Fooled the World

No one recognized Mykelti Williamson when he walked the red carpet at the premiere of Forrest Gump in 1994. The public was convinced that the actor playing Bubba Blue had a real deformity on his lower lip. But it was all a silicone prosthetic that Williamson wore, tightly fitted, for hours of shooting under the South Carolina sun.

That character brought him worldwide fame, but it also put a few sticks in his wheels. For almost a year, casting directors didn't call him because they thought his physique was exactly the one from the movie. He had to appear on television programs with his natural face so the industry would understand that it was simply a first-rate technical construction.

The trick worked a little too well.

Before that turning point, Williamson had already spent a decade paying his dues in American television. He started with small roles in Starsky & Hutch and Hill Street Blues during the 1980s. Back then, film work for African American actors was a much narrower and more competitive field than it is today. So he turned to hard physical work and to a discipline he had learned from his family in St. Louis.

From War Drama to Michael Mann Cinema

In 1995, his luck changed when Michael Mann cast him in Heat. Playing Sergeant Drucker alongside Al Pacino helped him shake off the image of the sweet, limited character Bubba had left him with. Williamson proved he could hold his own against the giants of acting without blinking. In that film, he brought a restraint that stood apart from the usual theatrics of action movies of the era.

Then came the blockbusters of the 1990s. He took part in Con Air in 1997, playing Baby-O, a role that demanded serious physical preparation. But the actor always preferred projects where the script mattered more than the explosions. Because Williamson sees filmmaking as a craft, not a runway for vanity.

It was a period of financial boom and long contracts.

Despite his Hollywood paychecks, he never abandoned the stage. In 2010 he joined Denzel Washington and Viola Davis for the Broadway production of Fences, August Wilson's masterpiece. His performance as Gabriel Maxson earned him the lasting respect of New York theater critics. Six years later, he reprised the same role in the film version directed by Washington in 2016.

Maturity on the Small Screen

Television in the new century offered him the nuance that big-budget movies denied him. In 2010 he joined the eighth season of 24 as Brian Hastings, and soon after he delivered one of his best performances in Justified. On the FX series, he brought Ellstin Limehouse to life, a butcher who controlled the criminal underworld with chilling calm. That role redefined his public image for a new generation of viewers who hadn't seen his films from the '90s.

But Williamson has never sat around waiting for a call from a major studio. In 2016, he joined the universe of The Purge: Election Year, bringing a dose of social reality to a dystopian horror franchise. He did it with the same seriousness he brought to Ali in 2001, once again under the direction of Michael Mann.

Constant work is his only religion.

In 2021, he joined the cast of Law & Order: Organized Crime as Preston Webb. At this stage of his career, the actor prefers characters with authority and moral gray areas that let him explore the psychology of power. In 2024, he appeared in the series Fallout, based on the video game of the same name, where he brought his veteran presence to a high-budget tech production.

In 2025, he finished filming The Clean Up Crew, an action movie directed by Jon Keeyes. Mykelti Williamson now has more than 120 official credits on his professional profile since he made his on-camera debut in 1978. He currently lives on a rural property, where he runs his own food company specializing in barbecue sauces.
