Keith David has a voice that sounds like it was recorded in a velvet cave.
Long before the world saw his face in the Antarctic snow, this Harlem-born actor trained at Juilliard to hone the instrument that would become his greatest asset. His mainstream film debut came in 1982 with The Thing. John Carpenter cast him as Childs, and the film became a cornerstone of modern horror.
In 1986, he played King in Platoon under Oliver Stone's direction. But the moment that burned his name into the memory of the average moviegoer was the six-minute alley brawl in They Live. That 1988 scene with Roddy Piper was shot largely without stunt doubles.
That ability to hold his own in front of the camera earned him the respect of the industry.
John Carpenter wanted a real fight, so the actors decided not to use stunt performers for the main blows. The result was five minutes and twenty seconds of rough choreography that defined an era. It was raw choreography aimed at realism rather than aesthetics.
In the mid-90s, his career took a very lucrative parallel path. David voiced Goliath in the series Gargoyles and later Spawn for the HBO production. His baritone voice led to work on Ken Burns documentaries and high-budget video games.
And the gamble paid off.
Because his voice is not an accessory but a precision tool. In 2004, he voiced the Inquisitor in Halo 2 and reprised the role in later installments. In 2009, he played Dr. Facilier in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. The song Friends on the Other Side produced a massive commercial impact on digital platforms thanks to his vocal performance.
Television gave him a steady home with the series Greenleaf between 2016 and 2020. There he played Bishop James Greenleaf for five seasons. He is an actor who doesn't do retirement or long breaks.
In 2022, Jordan Peele cast him to open Nope with a death that is as absurd as it is essential to the plot. David plays the patriarch of a family of horse trainers, and his screen time lasts only a few minutes. Yet his shadow hangs over the entire film.
In 2024, he was part of the voice cast of the animated series Hazbin Hotel. The show's first episode passed one hundred million views on a free video platform within a few months.
