Synopsis of Spawn

The series follows Al Simmons, an ex-military man and NSA agent who is betrayed by his boss, Jason Winn, and sent to be assassinated. His greatest wish is to return to Wanda, his wife, although his situation seems hopeless. The story takes place in an urban city, more down-to-earth than the one in the comic, where gangsters and petty criminals shape everyday life. Simmons, who has no other way to return to the world of the living, receives an offer from Malebolgia, a powerful demon. The deal requires him to become one of his soldiers, a Hellspawn or Spawn, in exchange for returning to walk the earth. Created by Todd McFarlane, the series airs on HBO.

Trivia about Spawn

In Spain the series aired on some TV channels, such as Calle 13 or Canal+, although its original broadcast was on HBO.

The series won an Emmy Award in 1999 in the category of Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Longer Than One Hour).

According to McFarlane himself, his first question to HBO executives was whether he could say the word "fuck," because a hundred other things depended on that permission.

The opening title sequence was animated by the Japanese studio Madhouse, which later went on to animate episodes of the second season.

Spicy City, which was promoted alongside the first season, reached HBO in July 1997, by which time the season had already finished airing.

HBO gave the first season a budget of six million dollars for its six episodes.

McFarlane directed the animated music video for Pearl Jam's "Do the Evolution" after Eddie Vedder watched the series on HBO in 1997.

A countdown clock appears at the start of several scenes to show how much energy Spawn has left. McFarlane acknowledged that it confused some viewers who were not familiar with the comic.
