Synopsis of Watchmen

Watchmen takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2019, 34 years after the events of the comic book series it is based on. In this alternate reality, vigilantes, who were once heroes, are banned for their violent methods. The Seventh Kavalry, a group of white supremacists, uses the writings and mask of Rorschach to wage a violent war against minorities and the police, whom they accuse of failing to address reparations for racial injustice. After the White Night attack, which targeted the homes of forty police officers, city officers hide their identities behind masks. Detective Angela Abar, who acts as a vigilante named Sister Night, investigates the murder of her friend and boss, Judd Crawford, and begins to uncover secrets about vigilantism. The series, created by Damon Lindelof for HBO, stars Regina King.

Trivia about Watchmen

HBO estimated that the Sunday night premiere drew only about 10% of the total audience for an episode, and that word of mouth attracted new viewers.

The series earned 26 nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards, the most for any program in the 2019 television season.

Sigourney Weaver was offered the role of Laurie but turned it down, and Jean Smart thanked her for it.

During the pilot's filming, the crew saw that Jeremy Irons gave Veidt a comedic tone, something the original comic did not suggest, and they kept it in the following episodes.

The soundtrack includes several songs from the musical Oklahoma!, reflecting the series' setting in Tulsa.

Lindelof learned about the 1921 Tulsa race massacre after reading an article by Ta-Nehisi Coates in The Atlantic, and decided to open the pilot with that event.

Lindelof tried to get Alan Moore's blessing for the series, but was turned down.

Damon Lindelof broke his rule against working with the same actor twice to cast Regina King, whom he had directed in the second season of "The Leftovers."
