Cheyenne Jackson stands six feet two, with a jaw that looks like it was sculpted by a comic book artist. In 2002 he arrived in New York with little more than a suitcase and a baritone voice that quickly pulled him out of chorus auditions. His first major leading role came in 2005 with All Shook Up.
That musical, built on songs by Elvis Presley, gave him the visibility needed for TV casting directors to start taking notes. He earned a nomination for the Outer Critics Circle Award and proved he could carry an entire show on his shoulders. But Jackson wanted to avoid being typecast as a period-drama heartthrob.
Broadway never quite let him go.
Theater can be a gilded cage for an actor with screen ambitions. Jackson knew his classic leading-man image could fade fast if he didn't break into film with substantial projects. In 2006 Paul Greengrass cast him in United 93. It was a raw film debut, far from the glitter of sequins, in which he played Mark Bingham.
Television offered him roles that played ironically with his good looks. In 2009 he joined 30 Rock to play Danny Baker. Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey needed an actor who could laugh at his own physical perfection, and Jackson fit effortlessly into the rhythm of the comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
His professional relationship with Ryan Murphy began in 2010 with a small role in Glee. It was the prelude to his major breakthrough in the anthology American Horror Story. Between 2015 and 2018 he appeared in four different seasons of the series. In Hotel he played designer Will Drake, and in Roanoke he took on the role of producer Sidney Aaron James.
Working with Murphy allowed him to explore darker corners of his acting range. In 2013 he publicly announced his sobriety after years of personal struggle with alcoholism. This life change coincided with a phase of greater depth in his professional choices and a much more mature voice on his records.
Sobriety changed the way he approached his work.
In 2021 he joined the cast of the comedy Call Me Kat alongside Mayim Bialik. The series ran for three seasons and ended in 2023 after the death of one of its leads. During that time Jackson balanced television with jazz concerts and studio recordings, such as the album Renaissance by 2016.
His role in the film Borderlands in 2024 marked a return to big-budget studio productions. He played Jakobs in an adaptation that aimed to capture the look of the original video game. Filming in Hungary required months of physical and technical preparation to fit into a post-apocalyptic science fiction world.
In 2022 he took part in the show The Masked Singer, finishing in second place under the costume of Prince. The production of Descendants: The Rise of Red in 2024 brought him back to reprise his role as Hades. The estimated budget for this installment exceeded 15 million dollars.
