Hollywood's Most Profitable Firing

Eric Stoltz was fired from Back to the Future after five weeks of filming because he wasn't funny. Robert Zemeckis wanted a light comedy, and Stoltz, trained in the strictest method acting, was playing Marty McFly as an existential tragedy.

Losing the role that would have made you a millionaire would crush anyone. But for him it became the foundation of a side career, quiet and elusive, and far more interesting than that of a simple teen idol.

And the gamble paid off.

From Mask's Latex to Tarantino's Syringe

In 1985, he spent months with his face covered in prosthetics to shoot Mask. He refused to let anyone on set see his real face and insisted people call him Rocky, the name of his character. That performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination and the respect of the New York film industry.

Then came the nineties and his alliance with independent film. In 1994, he took part in Pulp Fiction to play Lance, the dealer in a bathrobe who witnesses the most famous overdose in modern film.

He earned the union minimum for that role. He didn't care about the money because he preferred projects that held up well on video store shelves over time.

That was the general pattern of his golden decade.

He appeared in Jerry Maguire and Anaconda without losing his cool when moving from a blockbuster to a B-movie. Because Stoltz always understood that prestige doesn't depend on the budget but on who sits in the director's chair.

The Refuge Behind the Cameras

Starting in 2000, the actor grew tired of waiting by the phone for calls. He decided that directing was a much more stable and less cruel trade than acting, where you always depend on your looks.

He specialized in high-end television. He directed episodes of Glee and Law & Order and served as lead executive producer of the series Madam Secretary between 2014 and 2019.

He keeps working quietly.

In 2024, he directed two episodes of the second season of Will Trent for ABC. His contract stipulated full control over the final cut of those episodes and strict adherence to an eight-day shooting schedule per episode.
