Rosanna Arquette was never meant to be a conventional star. She grew up in a commune in Virginia under a philosophy of total freedom that she later brought to her characters. In 1982 she received an Emmy nomination for her role in the TV movie The Executioner's Song.
It was the first sign that the Arquettes were here to stay.
Still, the Los Angeles industry always felt like a foreign place to her. In 1985 she starred in Desperately Seeking Susan, and the whole world turned its eyes to her. Although the press became obsessed with Madonna, it was Arquette who carried the film's dramatic weight.
That same year she worked under the direction of Martin Scorsese in After Hours. The film won the Best Director award at Cannes and made her the favorite actress of auteurs with an urban sensibility. Still, she preferred projects that made major studio executives uncomfortable.
Hollywood began to see her as someone hard to categorize. So she sought fresh air in Europe to escape the labels of fashion magazines. In 1988 she shot The Big Blue with Luc Besson and became a key face in the French market.
The American industry never understood her rhythm.
That distance allowed her to choose roles other actresses turned down for fear of damaging their public image. In 1994 she accepted a brief role in Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino called her to play Jody, and her piercing scene is one of the most memorable moments of the decade. She accepted the role without reading the full script because she trusted the director's vision.
In 1996 David Cronenberg chose her for Crash. It was a risky bet that explored the relationship between pain and technology. The film caused scandals at several festivals, but she defended the project with a composure that disarmed the most conservative critics.
In 2002, she decided to step behind the camera to direct Searching for Debra Winger. The documentary examined why actresses disappeared from the screen once they turned 40. She managed to interview names like Jane Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg to expose a system that discarded female talent for aesthetic reasons.
It was a quiet declaration of war.
Arquette has always been aware of the abuse of power in the industry. In 2017 she was one of the first women to speak publicly about Harvey Weinstein. Her testimony helped other women break their silence and change the rules of the game in international productions.
In 2022 she appeared in the film Signs of Love, sharing the cast with her nephew Hopper Penn. During 2023 she joined the cast of the series Florida Man and worked on the French production L'Amour et les Forêts. Her earnings from these independent productions stayed far from the figures of superhero blockbusters.
She finished filming Holy Mortals at the end of 2024 under the direction of James Bird. The distribution deal for the European market closed for a figure close to two million euros.
