David Arquette was born in a commune in Virginia in 1971. That's not a minor detail, since his family was already a fundamental part of the American acting machine. His grandfather Cliff and his father Lewis had come before him in a profession where his siblings Rosanna, Patricia, Richmond and Alexis were already carving out their own space.
He grew up surrounded by scripts and cameras.
But David always preferred the profile of a lone wolf. He started with supporting roles on television in the early nineties, and in 1992 he appeared in the film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was a box office flop. But it helped him break into the circuit of major studios without making much of a media splash.
In 1996, Wes Craven was cast as Deputy Sheriff Dewey Riley in Scream. That changed his bank account dramatically. The character was supposed to die in the first original script. But the director decided audiences would empathize with his clumsiness, and kept him alive for four installments of the horror franchise.
There he met Courteney Cox. They married in 1999 and founded the production company Coquette Productions to manage their own projects behind the camera.
And then came the year 2000.
To promote the movie Ready to Rumble, he got involved in professional wrestling. He won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship to the disbelief of fans. It was a publicity stunt that nearly destroyed his reputation among sports purists. David decided to donate all the money he earned to the families of deceased wrestlers to ease the criticism.
For several years, he was typecast in physical comedy roles or quirky supporting parts. In 2002, he starred in Eight Legged Freaks. It was a horror film with giant spiders that had a modest run in theaters internationally.
But the actor never stopped working.
In 2020, he released the documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette. Filmed over several years, this piece follows his attempt to redeem himself in the world of wrestling despite his chronic health problems. He suffered a heart attack in 2017, which forced him to rethink his pace of life and his professional priorities away from the spotlight.
In 2022, he returned to the fictional town of Woodsboro for the fifth installment of Scream. His character closed a narrative loop that fans of the franchise had been demanding for years on specialized forums. For 2023, he took part in the series Mrs. Davis playing Monty, and focused on his side as a nightclub owner in Los Angeles.
In 2024, he finished filming The 4th Reich. The film's budget was set at $15 million.
