Neve Campbell's feet were wrecked by ballet long before Ghostface chased her across a film set. By age nine she was already part of the National Ballet School of Canada, and that physical rigidity shaped the way she moved in front of the camera. But chronic injuries forced her to trade ballet shoes for scripts when she was barely a teenager.
In 1994, she broke into American television with Party of Five. That drama about five orphaned siblings gave her the dramatic foundation she needed to be more than just a pretty face in casting catalogs. She played Julia Salinger for six seasons, and that constant exposure caught the attention of Wes Craven.
The director was looking for someone who could project intelligence and vulnerability at the same time. In 1996, the release of Scream changed the rules of commercial horror movies. The film cost 15 million dollars and went on to gross more than 170 million worldwide.
Campbell became the face of the genre without trying to.
That same year, she appeared in The Craft. The film became a cult classic for the 90s generation and proved that her appeal went beyond scream-queen roles. The industry tried to typecast her as a professional victim, but she chose to take risks on projects that broke her wholesome image.
In 1998 she agreed to shoot Wild Things. It was a deliberate decision to move away from the naive teen image she had on television. The pool scene with Denise Richards sparked a media buzz that is still discussed in analyses of late-century film noir. She wanted to prove she could handle characters with dark complexities, and audiences responded by filling theaters.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite her massive fame, she decided to move to London in 2005. She wanted to escape the pressure of Hollywood and focus on West End theater. During that period, she turned down big productions to work in plays by Arthur Miller and to pursue a more anonymous life. She returned to the United States only for very specific projects that would allow her to keep her residence in Europe.
In 2011 she returned to her role as Sidney Prescott in Scream 4. Critics praised the fact that her character had not aged into a caricature but into a woman hardened by trauma. It was around this time that she began selecting appearances in prestige series such as Mad Men and House of Cards, where she played Leann Harvey in 2016.
Her relationship with the franchise that brought her worldwide fame hit a major setback in 2022. Campbell announced she would not take part in the sixth installment of the series because the financial offer did not match what she had contributed to the brand over the decades. Her refusal to accept a lower salary because she is a woman sparked a necessary debate about the pay gap in the film industry.
She kept her composure with absolute firmness.
In 2022 she joined the cast of El abogado del Lincoln for Netflix. Her role as Maggie McPherson let her explore a more mature professional register, away from the spotlight of action blockbusters. But the market is cyclical, and negotiations with horror producers resumed under new terms.
In March 2024, her return was confirmed for Scream 7 under the direction of Kevin Williamson. The deal included a substantial fee increase and a major role in shaping the storyline. Filming was scheduled to begin at the end of that same year, with a release planned for 2026. The production set aside 20 million dollars solely for technical contingencies on the outdoor set.
