Tom Savini was looking for a different Barbara for her version of 1990's Night of the Living Dead. She found Heather Mazur. The actress not only survived the zombies in her film debut but also made her performance stand on its own against the memory of the original film. It was a explosive start that could have typecast her in horror for good.
But she decided that her path would be different.
Born in Pittsburgh in 1970, she took learning the craft very seriously before making her move to Hollywood. She trained at Carnegie Mellon University and later earned her graduate degree from the Yale School of Drama. This academic foundation explains why her name appears repeatedly in the credits of the most demanding scripted series on American television.
In 1998, she finished her studies at Yale and began taking on roles that demanded absolute technical precision. Mazur isn't an actress who chases media spectacle. She is one of those professionals who hold up the industry through the reliability of supporting characters that lend credibility to any police or medical storyline.
And so came her full-scale move into television. During the 2000s, she took part in high-profile productions such as Numb3rs, CSI: NY, and Castle. In 2008, she played Elizabeth in the comedy Bewitched alongside Eva Longoria. It was one of her few forays into big-budget commercial comedy before focusing almost entirely on procedural drama.
The industry respects her ability to step into a series already in production and understand the exact tone a scene requires. In 2011, she joined the cast of The Mentalist, and in 2014, she appeared in How to Get Away with Murder. She doesn't seek outright stardom, preferring the stability that comes with steady work in the most powerful writers' rooms in Los Angeles.
Theater has never stopped being her main refuge.
Despite her television schedule, she kept one foot on the stage with productions such as The Grapes of Wrath and A Streetcar Named Desire. This duality lets her maintain a dry, direct style that casting directors especially value. So when streaming began devouring the traditional market, she was already established as a safe bet.
In 2019, she joined the cast of Good Trouble as Angela Miller. It was a recurring role that ran until 2021 and allowed her to explore more complex power dynamics. But her breakout moment in international visibility came with one of Netflix's biggest bets in the legal drama genre.
In 2022, she played Gwen on The Lincoln Lawyer. Her character is key to understanding the lead's past, and Mazur brings a restraint that balances the frantic pace of the legal plot. The series reached No. 1 globally on the platform for several weeks after its May premiere that year.
Her work pace never slows down.
Also in 2022, she appeared in the horror film The Inhabitant under the direction of Jerren Lauder. In this production, she played Diane and shared the cast with Odessa A'zion and Leslie Bibb. The film was shot mainly on location in New Mexico with an estimated budget of $1.5 million for its main production phase.
