The waitress who survived Hollywood

Charlene Amoia was born in Buffalo and grew up determined to leave for a chance to stand in front of a camera. Before landing work on television sets, she worked as a model in New York. It was a period of quick castings and many rejections that toughen up any aspiring actor.

In 2001 she moved to Los Angeles with only the clothes on her back.

She started with brief appearances on shows like Joey and Girlfriends. They were one-day jobs that helped pay the bills in a city that devours the savings of up-and-coming actors. But her luck changed when she landed a sitcom looking for a recurring face for its main bar.

She played Wendy in How I Met Your Mother from 2005 to 2011.

She appeared in 17 episodes of the CBS series. That waitress role at MacLaren's Pub gave her more visibility than she expected, but also the risk of being typecast. Many actors settle for the weekly paycheck of a hit series and forget to look for projects that demand more than pouring fake beers.

And she decided she wanted to make movies.

Ghosts and Settling Scores

In 2012, she appeared in American Reunion as Ellie. It was her first real experience with a big-budget production built for mass release in theaters. The film grossed more than $230 million at the worldwide box office and allowed her to move away from traditional television.

Amoia sought roles with more dramatic weight in genre films.

In 2020 she joined the DC Comics universe with the film Birds of Prey. She played Maria Bertinelli, Huntress's mother, in a flashback sequence that defines the main character's entire motivation for revenge. It was a physically demanding role that required a stage presence unlike anything she had done on television up to that point.

Then came big-screen horror.

In 2021 she played Judy Glatzel in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Working under director Michael Chaves meant joining one of the most profitable franchises in the industry. Filming the possession scenes required several days of practical effects and precise technical coordination to prevent injuries on set.

But independent film also had a place in her schedule.

In 2023 she shot the Western The Old Way alongside Nicolas Cage in Montana. The production had to deal with extreme weather conditions that forced changes to the outdoor shooting plan during the second week of filming. That same year she appeared in the thriller Nefarious, playing Dr. Melody Brooks.

The film Nefarious had an estimated budget of $5 million.
