François Chau was born in Phnom Penh in 1959. His childhood was a series of constant escapes across Southeast Asia before settling permanently in California. He got into acting almost by accident during the 1980s because he needed to pay the bills while studying.
His first major role came in 1991 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. There, he played Shredder. It was a physically demanding job in heavy armor that barely showed his face, but it gave him his first real experience in a big Hollywood production.
He took the role for the paycheck.
For years he landed brief appearances in shows like MacGyver or ER. Those were times when Asian-origin actors were relegated to supporting roles or heavily marked stereotypes. Chau kept going by working in theater and voicing video games to stay on casting lists.
The real breakthrough of his career came in 2005. The producers of Lost were looking for someone who could convey authority and mystery through vintage orientation videos. Chau put on the lab coat of Dr. Pierre Chang and recorded those magnetic instructional videos that drove millions of viewers wild.
He appeared in seventeen episodes. But his presence was so powerful that fans of the series created endless theories about his different aliases on screen. He turned a supporting character into the central axis of the island's mythology while barely leaving a fictional laboratory.
And he did it without raising his voice.
After the series ended in 2010, his profile changed. Casting directors were no longer looking for a generic Asian actor but specifically for François Chau. That's how he joined the cast of The Expanse in 2015, playing one of the most hated characters in the storyline.
In the space saga, he played Jules-Pierre Mao over twenty episodes. His character was an unscrupulous tycoon who experimented with alien technology at the expense of human lives. Chau gave the villain a icy calm that was more frightening than any display of physical violence.
Filming these scenes required absolute technical precision because of the heavy use of green screens.
In 2022, he appeared in the film The Menu. He played one of the wealthy diners who suffer the wrath of a deranged chef. It was a brief role, but it carried a dry irony that fit perfectly with the satirical tone of the film directed by Mark Mylod.
In 2024, he took on the role of the Great Sage in the live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender. For this project, he had to endure makeup sessions lasting several hours before each day of filming on the Vancouver sets.
The production of this first season had a budget of 15 million dollars per episode.
