Elisabeth Moss was born in 1982 in Los Angeles. Her parents were professional jazz musicians, and she grew up surrounded by sheet music and rehearsals. Her first ambition wasn't film but classical ballet. She moved to New York to train at the School of American Ballet, because the stage was her only real goal.
But acting came along sooner than expected.
In 1999, she landed the role of Zoey Bartlet in The West Wing. That job let her see how a top-tier production ran for seven straight seasons. She wasn't chasing quick fame like the teen-drama crowd. She preferred the slow, steady grind. That's why she agreed to join Girl, Interrupted that same year. She shared the screen with major stars, yet she held her own with an impressive technical coolness.
And the gamble paid off.
Her career shifted gears in 2007. Moss joined the cast of Mad Men to play Peggy Olson. At first, she seemed like a supporting character destined to serve coffee and put up with put-downs. But the writers noticed an unusual strength in her gaze. Peggy ended up at the heart of the series' social transformation. Moss shot 92 episodes and earned six Emmy Award nominations for this role.
During those years of intense filming, she learned that real power in the industry doesn't lie only in acting. In 2013, she starred in Top of the Lake under the direction of Jane Campion. That experience in the New Zealand landscapes earned her a Golden Globe. Moss began to realize that characters with psychological cracks were her natural specialty.
Silence is often her best tool.
In 2017, she made her decisive move toward financial and creative independence. Moss accepted the lead role in The Handmaid's Tale but insisted on serving as executive producer from day one. She wanted a say in the editing and visual style of every episode. Her involvement ran so deep that she ended up directing several episodes in the seasons that followed. By 2018, Moss was earning $1 million per episode filmed.
Unlike many of her peers, Moss prefers not to rehearse scenes at home. She says spontaneity disappears if you repeat your lines twenty times in front of the mirror. This approach helped her headline The Invisible Man in 2020. The film had a budget of $7 million and grossed more than $140 million at the global box office.
Her business side grew when she founded her own production company, Love and Squalor Pictures. Through this company, she develops projects where she seeks full control over the source material. In 2022, she premiered Shining Girls on Apple TV+, where, in addition to acting, she directed two key episodes. The administrative workload that comes with post-production doesn't scare her.
In 2024, Moss starred in the espionage thriller The Veil, filmed in Turkey and France. For this role, she had to learn different accents and hand-to-hand combat choreography. That same year, she appeared in the horror film Shell, directed by Max Minghella. The actress holds an exclusivity contract that lets her veto any changes to the final cut of her main projects.
Here's her method.
Filming for the final season of The Handmaid's Tale was set to begin in Toronto in the summer of 2024, with a production budget exceeding $100 million for the series finale.
