Synopsis of The Handmaid's Tale

In a future United States, transformed into the Republic of Gilead after a civil war, a totalitarian theocratic regime has reduced women to property. Birth rates have plummeted, and the few fertile women left are recruited as handmaids, forced to serve as sexual slaves to repopulate the country. Elisabeth Moss plays June, one of these women, separated from her family and assigned to the home of a commander and his wife, Serena Joy. The series, created by Bruce Miller and based on the novel by Margaret Atwood and streaming on Hulu, follows her forced adaptation to this new life as she searches for a way to survive in a system that sees her only as a tool for reproduction. The first episode shows the clash between her will and the rules of a state that bars women from reading, writing or controlling money.

Trivia about The Handmaid's Tale

The first season won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations, and it was the first Hulu production to win a major award.
Development began at Showtime, which rejected the pilot, and its original creator, Ilene Chaiken, ended up as showrunner of Empire.
Elisabeth Moss made her directing debut in the fourth season, but filming was halted after a few weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oprah Winfrey makes an uncredited appearance as a news anchor heard on a car radio during the second season.
Cambridge, Ontario, was nominated by the Location Managers Guild International for Best Film Office in the third season, the first time a Canadian office earned that nomination.
Some critics considered the violence in the second season excessive, and journalist Rebecca Reid of The Daily Telegraph admitted she had a panic attack while watching an episode.
The sixth season, announced on September 6, 2024, began production as the series' final season, and Hulu then said it would return in spring 2025; Josh Charles joined the cast.
Hulu premiered the sixth and final season on April 8, 2025, with Elisabeth Moss leading the cast, and scheduled ten episodes to close out the series.
