The weight of a golden surname

Max Minghella grew up watching his father, Anthony Minghella, choreograph the chaos on sets of major productions. But young Max decided his path would not be lived in anyone's shadow. In 2005, he debuted in Bee Season, and from that moment on his face became associated with a contained intensity that few actors of his generation handle with such ease. He doesn't chase leading roles at all costs.

At thirteen, he visited the set of The English Patient and realized that filmmaking was a craft for artisans. He trained at the National Youth Theatre in London because he wanted to understand the technique before chasing fame. In 2005, he took part in Syriana alongside George Clooney. That experience taught him that in Hollywood, silence says far more than shouting.

The family name didn't give him his talent.

In 2010, he played Divya Narendra in The Social Network. David Fincher made him repeat takes until he was physically exhausted. But that discipline helped him hold his own against Ryan Gosling in The Ides of March during 2011. His performance as Ben Harper in that political thriller is his most balanced work to date.

Screenwriting as a Creative Refuge

He didn't settle for acting in front of the camera. In 2016, he wrote the screenplay for The 9th Life of Louis Drax, a dark story that had sat in a drawer for years. And in 2018, he took the decisive step behind the camera with Teen Spirit. The film is a pop fairy tale starring Elle Fanning, shot in just 30 production days.

Directing was his backup plan since adolescence.

The general public recognized him on a massive scale in 2017. His role as Nick Blaine in The Handmaid’s Tale gave him a global platform. The character is opaque and dangerous. Minghella chose to play him with a economy of gestures that frustrates and attracts the show's audience in equal measure.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2021, he joined the horror franchise Spiral, playing Detective William Schenk. A year later, in 2022, he became part of the ensemble cast of Babylon under the direction of Damien Chazelle. His role as Irving Thalberg in that film was a return to the classic roots of studio cinema. Filming Babylon in 2022 required a technical effort involving more than 100 different locations.
