Samira Wiley got into Juilliard because they never gave up. Before landing a spot at the prestigious New York school, they were turned down by nearly every drama conservatory in the city. But they kept pushing, knowing that their technical training was the only currency that mattered in a market that still wasn't looking for profiles like theirs.
The industry took its time to understand their profile.
In 2010 Samira Wiley graduated and started working as a waitress while auditioning for small stage plays. Back then, streaming didn't exist, and Black actresses were often relegated to uncredited supporting roles. But her luck changed when a classmate told her about a casting call for a series set in a women's prison.
In 2013 the opportunity came that rewrote her career. She landed the role of Poussey Washington in Orange Is the New Black. At first, her contract was for a background character with barely three lines of dialogue. But her chemistry with her castmates forced the writers to give her a narrative weight nobody had anticipated.
No one expected a prison series to change the rules of the game.
Wiley earned the union minimum during the first season. But the massive success of the Netflix drama put her at the center of the cultural conversation. Her character became the emotional heart of the series until her traumatic exit in 2016.
Poussey's death sparked protests on social media and debates about racial violence in American television. Wiley learned she would die a year before filming the episode. But she kept the secret so as not to break the tension on set and to protect the audience's surprise.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017 she joined the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale to play Moira. For this role, she received four consecutive Emmy nominations. In 2018 she won the award for outstanding guest actress in a drama series after a very close vote by the Academy.
Her move into film included projects such as Detroit in 2017 and Breaking News in Yuba County in 2021. But Wiley has always preferred the depth that television or the theater stage allows. In 2022 she made her Broadway debut in August Wilson's The Piano Lesson alongside Samuel L. Jackson.
In 2017 she married Lauren Morelli in Palm Springs. They met on the set of the Netflix series, where Morelli worked as a writer. In 2021 their daughter, George Elizabeth, was born after a pregnancy they kept secret until the very end.
In 2024 she voiced a role in the animated series Velma, and in 2025 she finished shooting the final season of the Hulu series. Filming of the sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped with a budget of ten million dollars per episode.
