Madeline Brewer grew up in Pitman, a town in New Jersey where local theater was the only logical outlet for an early calling. In 2013, she auditioned for a Netflix series that didn't yet have a name in the industry. She ended up playing Tricia Miller in Orange Is the New Black.
That character with braids and drug addiction lasted just seven episodes. And although critics focused on her, the reality after filming was different. She went months without receiving any major calls after her character died on screen.
The industry tends to forget supporting players quickly.
But in 2014, she landed a role in Hemlock Grove. There, she began to understand that her face fit unsettling stories better than by-the-book romantic comedies. That instinct for the strange saved her from fading away after her first television hit.
In 2017, she received the script for The Handmaid’s Tale to play Janine Lindo. The role required her to wear an eye prosthetic during twelve-hour days, which caused constant dizziness. But that physical discomfort helped her build the mental fragility of a woman broken by a totalitarian system.
The series gave her the confidence to star in Cam in 2018. In this psychological horror thriller, she had to play both a webcam performer and her digital double. It was an exhausting technical shoot, since she filmed most of her scenes alone in front of a green screen.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019, she appeared in Hustlers alongside Jennifer Lopez, playing Dawn. It was a change of pace she needed to move away from the dramatic intensity of Gilead. Brewer has always looked for projects where her look is a tool for transformation and not just an aesthetic ornament.
During 2021, she starred in The Ultimate Playlist of Noise, aiming for a more upbeat tone. But drama remains her natural habitat. In 2024, the production of the fifth season of You cast her to bring Bronte to life, a bookstore employee who connects with the protagonist's past.
This role marks her return to mainstream productions after a period focused on the independent circuit. Signing the contract with Netflix to close out one of the platform's most-watched series ensures her on-screen presence through 2025.
Filming for these episodes was scheduled for the spring of 2024 at various locations in New York.
