Peter Scanavino has hands roughened by more than just turning script pages. In 2010, he decided acting wasn't enough and enrolled at the French Culinary Institute in New York. He worked in the kitchens of the prestigious Blue Hill restaurant in Manhattan while his generation's peers desperately chased auditions.
And the gamble paid off.
That stretch in the kitchen gave him a grounded sense of reality that few television actors hold on to. Before stepping onto the NBC sets, the actor had already landed brief roles in The Bedford Diaries and Royal Pains. But none of those jobs gave him the stability he was looking for to support his family in a city as relentless as New York.
In 2013, he returned to acting with a different mindset. He wasn't after fame but craft. His entry into Dick Wolf's franchise was bumpy and curious, since before becoming the face of the law, he was a suspect. In episode 14 of season 14 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, he played Johnny Dubcek, a character who had nothing to do with his future role.
Most actors who guest-star on the series disappear forever into the network's archive. But the casting team saw something in Scanavino that broke the production's usual rules. In 2014, they offered him the role of Dominick Carisi Jr., a detective with Italian roots who came in to fill emotional gaps on the team.
And she did it without making a fuss.
At first, audiences received Carisi with reservations because of his blunt and sometimes rough style. But Scanavino built the character through restraint and steady growth. In 2019, the writers decided the detective should evolve and made him an assistant district attorney. This shift gave the actor a far more verbal and analytical side to explore on camera.
An actor's salary on these productions is usually a closely guarded secret, but his staying power across more than two hundred episodes earns him a status few achieve in today's industry. Scanavino rarely turns up in gossip magazines or on the loudest red carpets in Los Angeles. He prefers the anonymity of his life in New York with his wife, painter Lisha Bai.
Beyond the world of television courtrooms, he has sought out projects that demand different registers. In 2020, he took part in the anthology series Social Distance, filmed entirely during lockdown. There he explored family tensions in an environment of total isolation (a project far removed from pristine suits and media trials).
But his face is forever tied to the city of skyscrapers. He has appeared in quintessential New York productions such as The Good Wife and The Leftovers, showing that his profile fits perfectly into American urban drama. In 2005, he had already shown glimpses of his talent in the film Zenith, although the wider audience would take nearly a decade to notice.
He isn't an actor who makes big headlines.
In 2024, Scanavino completed his tenth consecutive season on air playing the same character. That milestone places him in a select group of professionals who manage to make a living from a single series for a full decade. His contract is renewed under strict confidentiality clauses, while filming still takes up ten months a year at the Chelsea Piers studios.
