David Costabile is the most present invisible man on American television. His face is a map of supporting characters who end up stealing the spotlight from headline stars. He doesn't chase easy fame or fashion magazine covers.
He trained at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University during the 1990s. There he learned that silence communicates more than shouting. Before stepping onto a film set, he spent years working on Broadway stages in productions such as Translations in 2007.
Theater gave him his craft.
In 2008 he appeared in the fifth season of The Wire. He played Thomas Klebanow, a newspaper editor caught in the decline of print journalism. It was a brief role, but it put his name on casting directors' lists of actors capable of bringing intellectual weight to a storyline.
Industry recognition arrived in 2010. He joined the Breaking Bad universe to play Gale Boetticher, an eccentric chemist who made coffee with laboratory equipment and adored the poetry of Walt Whitman. He appeared in just seven episodes, but his death defined the direction of the entire series.
And then the phone didn't stop ringing.
In 2012, he joined the cast of Suits as Daniel Hardman. He was the subtle antagonist who drove the main characters crazy with legal technicalities. But his big career breakthrough came in 2016 with Billions. Mike Wagner, known as Wags, became the most ruthless chief of operations on Wall Street.
He played Wags over 84 episodes across seven seasons until the production wrapped in 2023. The character demanded exhausting physical energy and a frantic dialogue pace. Costabile approached him with a mix of cynicism and loyalty that set him apart from the usual stereotypes of financial dramas.
Steven Spielberg cast him in 2012 as part of the cast of Lincoln. He played James Ashley in a production with a 65 million dollar budget. He's not usually seen in big action blockbusters, but in 2016 he shot 13 Hours under the direction of Michael Bay.
He doesn't need to be the lead to control the pace.
In 2019 he stepped into the role of Doc McGhee for the Mötley Crüe biopic titled The Dirt. It was a change of register in which he traded tailored suits for the chaos of 1980s rock. In 2024 he took part in the film The Last Front, a war drama set in World War I and shot on location in Belgium.
By 2025, he is confirmed to appear in the series Snatchback. The project is executive produced by Robert Levine and focuses on the world of hostage rescues in international conflict zones. Filming was scheduled with a top-tier crew for various locations outside the United States.
