The Queens Tough Guy Look

Mike Starr stands nearly six feet six inches tall and has the face of someone who knows exactly where the problems are buried. Born in Queens in 1950, he earned his living as a waiter in venues where the atmosphere was rougher than any Hollywood script before he ever stood in front of a camera.

His physique dictated his destiny.

In 1980 he made his film debut in Cruising alongside William Friedkin. It wasn't a long part, but it helped casting directors note his name on the list of convincing tough guys (the ones who don't need to talk to be scary). And from that moment on, the phone didn't stop ringing at his home in New York.

By the end of that decade he had already worked with directors of the stature of Woody Allen on Radio Days and Brian De Palma on The Untouchables. Starr brought a massive physical presence that balanced out any scene, serving as the perfect counterpoint to the more stylized leading men of the era.

The Year That Changed Everything

Martin Scorsese called him in 1990 for Goodfellas. He played Frenchy, the guy who helps plan the Lufthansa heist and ends up having dinner with the rest of the crew while the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife.

Sharing a set with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci takes a special kind of nerve. But Starr didn't flinch, bringing that mix of menace and everyday realism that film noir in the nineties desperately sought on every corner of Brooklyn.

But his career wasn't limited to pulling triggers in dark alleys.

In 1994 he accepted the role of Joe Mentalino in Dumb and Dumber. It was a risky decision, since he went from the New York mob to a comedy by the Farrelly brothers. So he prepared himself for insults and heavy-handed jokes from Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels throughout the shoot.

The gamble paid off.

That hamburger scene with the hot peppers became a moment fans of the genre still remember. It showed that his size could be an excellent comedic tool when used with the right kind of attitude. Because Starr understands that humor often comes from the contrast between a serious man and an absurd situation.

A Résumé Spanning a Thousand Miles

For decades he has moved from television to film with barely a break. In 1992 he appeared in The Bodyguard, and in 1990 he was in Miller’s Crossing under the Coen brothers. He has never been the top-billed star, but his name appears in more than two hundred official titles.

Actors with his kind of profile sometimes struggle with being typecast. But Starr always says he'd rather keep working than wait for the role of a lifetime while bills pile up at the door. His work ethic is that of a blue-collar worker who shows up on time to the set, delivers his lines and heads home without making a fuss.

In 2022 he played Joe Colombo in the series The Offer. The production depicts the real problems Francis Ford Coppola faced while filming The Godfather due to pressure from the Italian-American league.

It's funny that an actor who started out playing a generic mobster ended up portraying a real boss of the New York mafia forty years later.

Mike Starr has a brother, Beau Starr, who also works as a professional actor.

They have never competed for the same roles.

His work pace has stayed steady despite the passing decades and the evolution of the industry. In 2024 he took part in the shoot of The Unholy Trinity in Montana. Filming for that production lasted exactly thirty days under extreme weather conditions on location.
