The Weight of the McGiver Name

Boris McGiver was in no hurry to become an actor.

The son of legendary character actor John McGiver, he grew up watching his father steal scenes from Audrey Hepburn or Dustin Hoffman. But Boris preferred to wait. He didn't officially join the actors' union until he was past thirty, because he first spent his time studying to become a social worker.

That late-blooming maturity gave him a natural air of authority that American television learned to exploit from the late 1990s onward. He wasn't chasing fame or the spotlight of red carpets. And that lack of ego allowed him to accept small parts in huge productions where other actors would have demanded more screen time.

In 2006, he played Charles Marimow in the fourth season of The Wire. It was a brief but pivotal role that showed his ability to provoke an immediate rejection from viewers. His character was a bureaucratic cop who destroyed the investigative work of the main characters without batting an eye.

Fifty professional credits back a career that simmered slowly in New York theaters before making the jump to television sets.

The Hammerschmidts' Newsroom

That was the moment the industry stopped seeing him as just a familiar face.

Steven Spielberg called him in 2012 to take part in Lincoln. McGiver played Alexander Coffroth, a Democratic congressman whose moral weakness was key to the film's political plot. But his real breakthrough to global recognition would come a year later, thanks to Netflix.

In 2013, he joined the cast of House of Cards to bring to life Tom Hammerschmidt, the chief editor of the Washington Herald. His performance steered clear of the fireworks of Kevin Spacey. McGiver opted for the restraint and weariness of an old-school journalist searching for the truth in a corrupt environment.

He played the character for five seasons and became the moral anchor of a series that grew darker over time. Critics praised how his weary gaze and silences said more than the lead's direct-to-camera monologues. Three critics' award nominations highlighted the weight of his work in political drama.

His physique commands an authority that doesn't need to raise its voice.

And that physical presence let him move from press rooms to science fiction thrillers without missing a beat. In Person of Interest, he brought to life Hersh, a relentless assassin working for a secret government organization. McGiver performed his own stunts even though he was already past fifty years old.

Between Horror and Organized Crime

M. Night Shyamalan recruited him in 2019 for his television debut on Apple TV. In the series Servant, McGiver played Uncle George, an unsettling character who blended religious fanaticism with extreme visual grime. The actor spent hours in the makeup chair to achieve that neglected, almost corpse-like look.

In 2021, he appeared in the miniseries Dopesick, once again playing a law enforcement officer. This time he stepped into the shoes of a prosecutor trying to take down the Sackler family and their opioid empire. The production won several Emmy Awards and reinforced his reputation as the ideal actor for plots of high bureaucratic complexity.

But his work doesn't stop at social dramas. In 2024, he joined the DC Comics universe through the Max series The Penguin. In this show, he plays Castillo, a character tied to Gotham's power structures who interacts directly with the protagonist played by Colin Farrell.

Filming for this series required nine months of shooting on location in New York City under strict security measures to prevent leaks. McGiver wrapped recording sessions for this project in the first quarter of 2024.
