Robert Clohessy was born in the Bronx in 1957. His father was a police officer, and that biographical detail went on to shape nearly four decades of his professional career. He never had to look far for inspiration to play law enforcement officers, because the uniform was already hanging in his family's living room.
In 1986 he joined the cast of Hill Street Blues to bring to life Officer Patrick Flaherty. It was his first serious encounter with big-budget television and his chance to understand how the industry worked from the inside.
And the gamble paid off.
Sometimes physical appearance shapes destiny. Clohessy has that square jaw and the tough-guy stare of someone who has seen too many alley fights. But his training at SUNY Purchase allowed him to give humanity to characters who, in other hands, would have been mere hard-guy caricatures.
In the late nineties he landed on Oz, the HBO prison drama that changed the way violence was portrayed on television. There he played Sean Murphy for three years. It wasn't a lead role, but his presence brought the authenticity needed in a suffocating setting where silence carried more weight than shouting.
In 2010 he first put on the badge of Sid Gormley in Blue Bloods. What began as a one-season job became a steady gig that went on to span fourteen consecutive seasons on the air.
But his work isn't limited to patrolling fictional streets in New York. In 2013 he appeared in The Wolf of Wall Street under the direction of Martin Scorsese. It was a brief role. Still, working with Scorsese adds weight to any resume, even if you only appear on screen for a few minutes.
Before filming, he usually runs through his lines while walking around the set. He's a practical, no-fuss Method actor who values effectiveness over personal showboating. As a result, he has become one of those faces audiences recognize instantly, even if they can't always recall his first name.
He is a working actor through and through.
Not everything was commercial success on the big screen. Clohessy spent years in Broadway and Off-Broadway theater, looking for projects that would steer him away from the Irish cop stereotype. In 1982 he made his stage debut in The Lady and the Clarinet, and since then he has kept one foot on the stage to stay sharp with live performance.
In 2021 he appeared in the film The Many Saints of Newark. It was a return to the gangster stories and codes of honor that have defined much of his career on the East Coast. With veteran status, he can afford to choose smaller projects where the paycheck matters less than the quality of the script.
His brother John is also an actor. That healthy rivalry kept his ambition alive during the lean years he went through in the mid-nineties. At that time he had to accept supporting roles on procedural series to keep his work steady.
In 2024 he racked up more than one hundred different credits across film and television.
