Dylan Baker is the kind of actor you recognize instantly but whose name tends to slip your mind at dinner parties with friends. He was born in Syracuse in 1959 and honed his craft at Yale before breaking into New York stages. He's not a tabloid star, and he doesn't chase the spotlight on the red carpet. He prefers the shadow of the supporting role that holds up an entire film with just three scenes.
They were never a poster star.
His career took off quietly in 1987 with a small role in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. But his real breakthrough came when he decided he didn't mind being disliked by audiences. Baker understands that the most interesting celebrities are often the most detestable ones.
In 1998, he took on a role that would have sunk any less fearless actor. He worked under Todd Solondz in Happiness, playing a suburban child molester trying to keep up an appearance of normalcy. It was a kamikaze gamble. He made viewers feel physically uncomfortable seeing his friendly face hiding absolute darkness in front of the camera.
That role closed some commercial doors for him but opened the doors of unanimous critical respect. Baker handles like no one else that ambiguity of the perfect neighbor who hides secrets in the basement. He avoided the cliché of the operetta villain to build something far more terrifying because of how close it feels.
Sometimes talent means knowing how to wait.
In 1991, he had already shown his acting range by earning a Tony Award nomination for the play La Bête. The stage has always been his refuge when movies became too superficial. But television ultimately gave him the longevity that the studio system often denies character actors.
Many viewers associate him directly with the superhero world thanks to Sam Raimi. In 2004, he appeared in Spider-Man 2 as Dr. Curt Connors and reprised the role in the third installment of 2007. He never got to become the Lizard because the franchise changed hands too soon. It was a missed opportunity to showcase his more physical and monstrous side.
But television offered him characters with more edge and staying power. Starting in 2010, he played Colin Sweeney in The Good Wife and became one of the audience's favorites. Sweeney was a charismatic millionaire killer, and Baker played him with delicious cynicism. He earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for this role as a guest star.
In 2020, he joined the cast of Hunters to play a Nazi politician hiding inside the American government. He kept exploring that line of characters who pretend to be something they're not. Baker knows that deception is an actor's most powerful tool.
In 2023, he worked on Dream Scenario alongside Nicolas Cage under the direction of Kristoffer Borgli. He has lived in New York for decades with his wife, actress Becky Ann Baker. His contract for the stage production of Bernhardt/Hamlet in 2018 set a base salary of 2,500 dollars a week.
