At age twelve, she presented her parents with a business plan laid out in slides to convince them to let her become an actress. The proposal had no bohemian romanticism, only budgets, amortization schedules and a cold calculation of the family's risk.
That mathematical mindset explains her career better than any drama school could.
Born in Spokane, Washington, she spent nearly a decade landing small residual roles in quick-turnaround TV dramas. Her face would appear for just a few seconds in procedural series before the credits erased any trace of her. But while most aspiring actors wore themselves out in the waiting rooms of Los Angeles, she began building personal notebooks for each character, mapping out entire timelines with fictional biographies that covered everything from the role's childhood to the exact day the script began.
That quiet rigor caught the attention of cable television starting in 2018. In Sharp Objects and in the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale, she showed an unsettling restraint, far removed from the usual teen melodrama.
The definitive breaking point came in 2019 with the premiere of Euphoria on HBO. Her portrayal of Cassie Howard turned emotional desperation into uncomfortable television, combining extreme physical vulnerability with bursts of hysteria that escaped the camera's control.
In 2021, she repeated the trick in the satire The White Lotus, playing a cynical university student. Members of the Television Academy responded with a simultaneous double Emmy nomination in 2022, a milestone the industry usually reserves for performers with decades of stage experience behind them.
And the machine didn't stop.
Rather than settling into the prestige of an auteur, Sweeney understood that real sovereignty in the film industry is won by writing checks and controlling adaptation rights. In 2020, she founded her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, with one very clear goal: never depend on an agent's phone call.
She bought the script for Immaculate when it was little more than an abandoned draft gathering dust in a drawer ten years earlier. She reworked it, hired director Michael Mohan, and shot a convent horror nightmare in Rome that ended up multiplying its box office budget in 2024.
Shortly before, she had orchestrated the commercial phenomenon of Anyone But You in 2023, a classic romantic comedy she produced herself that grossed nearly $220 million on a budget of just $25 million. The actress personally designed the viral social media campaign, managed the rumors about her chemistry with Glen Powell, and proved that the romantic comedy could still fill theaters if the studio knew how to sell the right buzz.
So Hollywood took notice.
Because the business doesn't forgive the resounding box office stumbles of corporate blockbusters, like the one she suffered in 2024 with the ill-fated Madame Web, but Sweeney cushioned the blow by turning it into a contractual formality that financed her own independent projects. When the studio asked her to promote the superhero flop, she showed up at the TV set, delivered the required jokes, and returned to her office to oversee distribution contracts.
In 2025, she moved straight into filming the biographical drama Christy, where she underwent an intense physical training regimen to box on screen, followed by the film adaptation of the bestselling novel The Housemaid. She was an executive producer on both titles, with final cut rights over the edit.
There's no room for innocence in her filming schedule. The blonde star whom executives thought they could mold closed out 2025 earning more than ten million dollars per contract and retaining control of the secondary exhibition windows.
