Synopsis of Dune: Prophecy

Ten thousand years before the events of the novel Dune, sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen struggle to maintain the power and influence of the Sisterhood. The story begins eighty years after an alliance of humans defeated the thinking-machine armies that had nearly wiped them out. Now, the two women must face forces that threaten the future of humanity, while laying the foundations of the order that will later be known as the Bene Gesserit. Emily Watson plays Valya and Olivia Williams plays Tula. The series, created by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, airs on HBO and serves as a prequel to the Denis Villeneuve films.

Trivia about Dune: Prophecy

Legendary Television commissioned the series in June 2019 as a project called Dune: The Sisterhood, intended for WarnerMedia's streaming service, which did not yet have a name.
Villeneuve was set to direct the pilot, but he couldn't because of his commitment to Dune: Part Two, so in April 2022 Johan Renck took over for the first two episodes.
Jónsi was originally hired to compose the score, but in October 2023 the assignment passed to Volker Bertelmann.
Cinematographer Pierre Gill did not use the StageCraft virtual production technology, because the series was shot mostly on physical sets.
According to HBO, the first episode was watched by 15 million people worldwide during its first month on the air.
HBO renewed "Dune: Prophecy" for a second season before airing the finale of the first, scheduled for December 22, 2024.
Indira Varma, Tom Hollander and Ashley Walters will join the second season in roles yet to be revealed, while Emily Watson, Olivia Williams and Travis Fimmel will reprise their characters.
