In 1996, Indira Varma made her film debut in a role that would have sunk any other up-and-coming actress. Mira Nair cast her as the lead in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. The film faced censorship in India and Pakistan over its erotic content, but it caught London's attention for a RADA graduate with a rare magnetism.
Her background (an Indian father and a Swiss-Italian mother) gave her a physical ambiguity that casting directors exploited for years. But she never wanted to be an ethnic quota in British period productions. So she chose to balance classical theater with roles in crime series where her looks weren't the center of the plot.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2005, Rome arrived. Playing Niobe allowed her to move away from supporting roles with little dramatic weight. HBO then discovered that Varma could hold her own against the toughest male leads without flinching. It was her first major international contract, before cable television changed the rules of the game.
In 2014, she joined the cast of Game of Thrones to bring Ellaria Sand to life. Her character survived four seasons in a world where no one was safe. In 2017, she said goodbye to the series with a dungeon scene that still sparks technical debate about the ability to convey horror without saying a single word.
Gestural control is her signature. In 2019, she starred in the series For Life (produced by 50 Cent), playing a prison warden. The project was shot on real locations, and she insisted on austere costumes so they wouldn't distract from the legal conflict at the heart of the story.
Theater is her true home base.
In 2022, she shared the stage with Emilia Clarke in a production of The Seagull in London's West End. Tickets sold out months before the opening. In that production, Varma used a vocal projection technique she learned during her training years, which allows her to fill theaters seating a thousand people with apparent ease.
In 2022, she entered the Star Wars universe with Obi-Wan Kenobi. She played Tala Durith, an Imperial officer who helps the Jedi, and her on-screen death was one of the most talked-about moments among critics that year. Her ability to humanize military uniforms made her a sought-after asset for major entertainment franchises.
In 2023, she appeared in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Although her role was brief, the producers praised her discipline in the action scenes. Varma prefers to shoot her own risky sequences whenever the production company's insurance allows it.
Her work pace shows no signs of slowing down.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Doctor Who as the Duchess of Cherrydown. That same year, her role in Dune: Prophecy (the TV prequel to Denis Villeneuve's saga) was confirmed, where she plays Empress Natalya. Filming took place at the Origo Studios in Budapest under strict confidentiality agreements that banned mobile phones on set.
In 2024, the series Ratched canceled its second season after months of preproduction. Varma lost that deal due to budget cuts at the streaming platform.
