Synopsis of Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery is a series created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman that airs on CBS All Access, starring Sonequa Martin-Green. Set about ten years before the original Star Trek series, it follows Michael Burnham, a science specialist whose actions spark a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. After being court-martialed, she loses her rank and is assigned to the USS Discovery, a ship with an unusual propulsion system called the spore drive. On board, the lead character struggles with her new situation as the crew seeks out new worlds and new civilizations. The series explores these themes through a contemporary lens using science fiction.

Trivia about Star Trek: Discovery

The character of Paul Stamets is inspired by a real mycologist with the same name. He is the first openly gay character in a Star Trek series.

The character of Jett Reno was originally named Denise Reno, but Tig Notaro changed the name and chose "Jett" after the singer Joan Jett.

The ship takes its name from Discovery One in 2001: A Space Odyssey and from NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery.

The average cost of a first-season episode was between $8 and $8.5 million, making it one of the most expensive series ever made.

CBS's broadcast of the first episode drew a "decent" audience of 9.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.
