Alex Kurtzman doesn't need the average viewer to recognize his face on the red carpet as long as his scripts keep raking in billions at the global box office. He is an architect of commercial storytelling who has understood better than anyone how the gears of Hollywood work. His name is tied to Michael Bay's explosions and the Starfleet space voyages.

It all began with a high school friendship in California. Kurtzman met Roberto Orci when they were both teenagers, and that partnership became one of the most lucrative writing machines in the industry. In 2001, they joined the team of Alias under the guidance of J.J. Abrams. There they learned that the pace of modern television allows no breaks or filler moments.

And the move paid off.

In 2005, they co-wrote The Legend of Zorro and soon after hit the big leagues with Mission: Impossible III. Kurtzman writes with editing, visual impact and the ability of toys to sell on store shelves in mind. But his true trial by fire came when he had to revive an intellectual property that many had considered dead.

The Weight of Blockbusters

In 2009, he reinvented the Star Trek franchise alongside Abrams and Orci. They turned a franchise seen as niche into a massive action product. The script sacrificed part of the original philosophy to embrace a frenetic pace that attracted a new generation of moviegoers. The film grossed more than 385 million dollars and gave him the keys to the science fiction kingdom.

But big-budget filmmaking is a double-edged sword. Kurtzman co-wrote Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, a movie that critics tore apart but audiences devoured in theaters. In 2014, the creative partnership with Orci ended amicably so that each could pursue their own projects as independent directors and producers.

He is a natural survivor of the studio system.

The Stain of the Mummy

In 2017, he directed The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. That project was the cornerstone of the Dark Universe, Universal's attempt to copy Marvel's successful model using classic monsters. The film was a creative and financial stumble that abruptly canceled the plans for an entire franchise. Kurtzman later acknowledged that the experience was probably the greatest lesson of his professional career.

But television offered him the perfect refuge to rebuild his authority. In 2018, he signed a five-year contract with CBS worth an estimated 25 million dollars a year to oversee all the content of Star Trek on the small screen. Under his leadership, Discovery, Picard and Strange New Worlds were born, exponentially expanding Roddenberry's universe.

Failure is often the best teacher in Hollywood.

Total Control of the Galaxy

Through his production company Secret Hideout, he has taken absolute control of the content strategy at Paramount+. In 2022, he produced the series The Man Who Fell to Earth, showing that he still has an interest in science fiction with a more measured and reflective tone. However, his priority remains managing the brands that guarantee monthly subscriptions to streaming platforms.

In 2024, filming began on Star Trek: Section 31, a movie designed specifically for the digital market with Michelle Yeoh in the lead. Kurtzman no longer writes every line of dialogue, but he supervises every story arc of the series in development for 2025 and 2026. His ability to manage nine-figure budgets keeps him in a position of power that very few screenwriters ever reach.

The renewal agreement signed with CBS Studios extends his oversight of content until the close of the 2026 fiscal year, for a sum estimated at around 160 million dollars in total.
