Shazad Latif was born in London in 1988 and grew up in the Tufnell Park neighborhood, surrounded by a mix of Pakistani, English and Scottish roots. He was studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School when he decided to leave a year earlier than planned. The reason was a firm offer to join the cast of the espionage series Spooks.
He played Tariq Masood for three seasons, and that experience taught him how the rhythm of British television works. On that set, he learned that the silence of a sound engineer matters just as much as the lead actor's monologue. He wasn't chasing quick fame, but rather understanding how the industry works from the inside.
And the gamble paid off.
After his time in spy dramas, he moved into sitcoms with Toast of London. There he showed he could handle dry humor alongside Matt Berry. But his real international breakthrough came when casting directors for major franchises started noticing his looks and his ability to carry tense close-ups.
In 2016, Shazad Latif took on the challenge of playing Dr. Jekyll in the series Penny Dreadful. It was a physically demanding role in which he had to handle the character's duality without falling into the excesses typical of classical theater. Critics praised his ability to convey danger with a simple tilt of the neck.
Soon after, he landed the contract that would transform his global visibility. In 2017, he joined the universe of Star Trek: Discovery to bring Ash Tyler to life. The shoot in Toronto was demanding and required him to spend many hours in the makeup chair because of the complex storyline of his character. It was a period of intense media attention that the actor handled by keeping a low profile on social media.
Nobody expected that change.
Even though he was part of one of the most profitable franchises in the world, Latif remained interested in smaller-scale projects. In 2021, he appeared in the miniseries The Pursuit of Love under the direction of Emily Mortimer. There he shared the screen with Lily James and built a professional chemistry that would be repeated shortly after in film.
In 2022, he starred in the romantic comedy What’s Love Got to Do with It?, written by Jemima Khan. The film explored arranged marriages from a modern perspective, and Latif had to carry the emotional weight of the movie. Filming was split between London and various locations meant to recreate the atmosphere of Pakistan.
But the actor has always kept one foot in content creation beyond acting. He founded his own production company, Tinderbox, to develop stories that move away from the ethnic stereotypes often assigned to actors of his profile. He seeks total control over the stories that reach the screen.
In 2024, Shazad Latif took the lead in the blockbuster Nautilus, playing Captain Nemo. This version of Jules Verne's character was shot entirely at the Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland. The production had a massive budget and required state-of-the-art water tanks for the underwater sequences.
The contract for this series included an exclusivity clause that prevented him from accepting other projects during the ten months of filming in Australia.
