Bryan Fuller sent scripts to the production of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine until the doors of the offices finally opened. He had no contacts or connections. Just an unhealthy obsession with science fiction and a work ethic that drove his office colleagues to despair.
In 1997, he officially joined the franchise's writing team. There he learned that television is a meat grinder. But he also realized that fast-paced dialogue and dark humor could save any mediocre scene.
Space was his first school.
After his time on the Enterprise, he decided he wanted to explore death through comedy. In 2003, he premiered Dead Like Me, the story of a girl who dies when she is hit by a toilet seat on a space station and ends up working as the Grim Reaper on Earth.
It was the first warning sign of his ornate visual style: saturated colors and an obsession with symmetry reminiscent of a gothic auteur filmmaker. But tensions with the production company MGM were constant. Fuller left the series after only five episodes over irreconcilable creative differences.
In 2004, he tried something sweeter with Wonderfalls. The series lasted four episodes before the Fox network canceled it. But critics were already talking about a screenwriter with a distinctive voice who didn't fit the molds of commercial television.
Seven million dollars per episode was the budget he later worked with to bring his visual delusions to life.
And then came the cancellation.
The arrival of Pushing Daisies in 2007 brought an unprecedented display of chromatic fantasy to network television. It won seven Emmy Awards. But that year's writers' strike disrupted production, and the audience dropped off irreversibly.
Fuller has always had a complicated relationship with numbers. His series are expensive to produce and hard to sell to a mass audience. So he had to wait until 2013 to find his definitive project at NBC.
With Hannibal, he turned a criminal procedural into an almost religious sensory experience. Mads Mikkelsen lent the face, and Fuller lent the blood turned into art. The series' production design in 2015 reached levels of sophistication that have yet to be surpassed on cable television.
Aesthetics were everything.
Critical acclaim did not guarantee him a calm career. In 2017, he left the production of American Gods after a dispute over the budget for the second season. He was asking for more than ten million dollars per episode, and the production company Fremantle flatly refused to fund his vision.
The same thing happened with Star Trek: Discovery in 2016. He left the project before its premiere due to script delays and direct clashes with CBS. Fuller prioritizes his artistic vision over studio schedules, and that has cost him his place in the market's most profitable franchises.
In 2024, the industry's attention focused on his project Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming platform. It is a prequel to Friday the 13th that promised to revive the horror of the 1980s with his signature visual style. But old ghosts resurfaced in the middle of development.
In May 2024, it was announced that Fuller was leaving his post as the show's creative lead due to a restructuring at the production company A24. The screenwriter thus added another early exit from a major international brand.
Production of the first season of Crystal Lake was halted, with an estimated development cost exceeding five million dollars without a single frame having been shot.
