Synopsis of Defiance

Year 2046. Earth has been completely transformed by the arrival of alien refugees, the Votan, who expected to find an uninhabited planet and now share the world with humans. Joshua Nolan, a veteran of the Pale Wars, arrives with his adopted alien daughter, Irisa, in Defiance, a town built on the ruins of St. Louis. There, humans and aliens try to build a new society. The city refuses to take sides between the Earth Republic, dominated by humans and centered on New York, and the Votanis Collective, dominated by aliens and headquartered in Brazil. Nolan, the city's law enforcement representative, must keep order and neutrality in a place where interests clash every day. The series, created by Rockne S. O'Bannon, airs on Syfy and stars Grant Bowler.

Trivia about Defiance

David J. Peterson created two full languages, for the Castithans and the Irathients, during the first season, and by the end of the series he had developed four.

Bear McCreary gave each alien race its own musical tradition, with distinct instrumentation and lyrics, along with pieces for street musicians and popular songs.

Gillian Anderson was briefly considered for the roles of Amanda or Stahma, but the casting never moved forward because the producers believed she wouldn't want to return to episodic television.

Defiance premiered in several countries almost at the same time, which is unusual under international series distribution norms.

Syfy canceled "Defiance" on October 16, 2015 after three seasons; the third season had averaged 1.13 million viewers, compared with 2.09 million for the first.

Although it was canceled, "Defiance" remained Syfy's most-watched drama in 2015, according to its ratings; the decision was attributed to financial reasons.

The series began as a transmedia project coordinated with a video game of the same name from Trion Worlds, set in the same universe and launched alongside the TV show.
