Graham Greene wasn't looking for the spotlight when he started out in Toronto's alternative theater scene in the late seventies. He worked as a sound technician for rock bands and as a welder before acting crossed his path. There was no artistic epiphany or teenage dream of fame in his first steps.
In 1990, his life changed course with the release of Dances with Wolves.
He played Kicking Bird with a restraint that outshone much of Hollywood. That Oscar nomination pulled him out of nameless supporting roles and put him on the map of major productions. But Greene never bought into the traditional movie star persona.
He always preferred steady work to the red carpet.
During the nineties he took on projects as varied as Thunderheart and Die Hard with a Vengeance. In the latter action film he showed he could hold his own comedic ground opposite Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson without breaking a sweat. He never needed to shout to make the camera focus on him. His physical presence on screen was enough to balance out the chaos of the plot.
His role in The Green Mile in 1999 confirmed that his face carried more weight than any lengthy dialogue. He worked under Frank Darabont on one of the most profitable Stephen King adaptations of that decade. Audiences already saw him as a top-tier supporting actor who could emotionally carry entire scenes with a single gesture.
Genre films have always been his most comfortable refuge.
In 2017, he appeared in Wind River under the direction of Taylor Sheridan. Playing the local police chief allowed him to return to the dry, direct tone he commands so perfectly. The film served as a reminder that his veteran status is a valuable asset in contemporary noir that shuns fireworks.
He took a recurring role on the series Longmire between 2012 and 2017, where he explored the complexity of tribal law in a modern setting. The jump to prestige television didn't scare him, since the work pace was similar to what he knew from his early theater days. And the scripts offered nuances that commercial action cinema sometimes denied him.
In 2023, he appeared in a key episode of the series The Last of Us for HBO. His chemistry with Elaine Miles reminded viewers of his time on Northern Exposure three decades earlier. It was a well-executed nostalgia exercise that never felt forced by the demands of the script.
Filming in Alberta was close to home for him.
In 2024, he joined the Marvel universe with the series Echo, bringing Skully to life. He brought a much-needed human touch to a superhero storyline packed with digital effects and fight choreography. His contract reflected his status as a fixture of Canadian cinema after nearly half a century of continuous work.
The production of this series cost the studio 40 million dollars.
