Gary Farmer never asks permission to step into the frame. In 1995, he walked through a black-and-white forest alongside Johnny Depp in Dead Man. Jim Jarmusch gave him the role of Nobody, and Farmer decided he wasn't going to be the exotic extra of classic westerns.
That character spoke Indigenous languages and quoted William Blake. But what matters most is that he had complete control of the narrative opposite a lost protagonist. Farmer broke the mold of the mystical Native character to offer something far more down-to-earth and cynical.
His physical presence commands attention without him ever having to raise his voice.
Before Jarmusch came Powwow Highway in 1989. Farmer played Philbert Bono, a man who trades a pile of junk for an imaginary pony to set off on a spiritual journey. The film won at Sundance and put the spotlight on a reality the industry preferred to ignore.
And he did it without resorting to cheap drama. Farmer has always preferred dry humor and direct observation over sentimentality. Throughout those years, he worked tirelessly in television and independent film.
He never accepted the role of the invisible supporting actor.
In 1992, he appeared in The Broken Chain, and in 1998 in Smoke Signals. The latter was pivotal for cinema made by Native American communities. Farmer played an absent father who flees his own demons on an Idaho reservation.
Farmer didn't just wait for calls from his agents. In the nineties, he founded the magazine Aboriginal Voices and later a network of radio stations. He wanted his people to have their own media to tell their stories without outside filters.
But the blues was always there in the background. He formed his band, Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers, and devoted himself to touring stages while playing the harmonica. Music was never a hobby but an extension of his way of understanding art.
In 1999 he worked with Jarmusch again on Ghost Dog. It was a brief cameo but one remembered by the director's fans. He reappeared as Nobody, quietly connecting cinematic universes.
So his career became a network of constant collaborations.
The industry was slow to give him the place he deserved in major commercial productions. In 2021, the series Reservation Dogs put him back at the center of the board. He played Uncle Brownie, a veteran who lives in retirement in the woods and claims to know secret fighting techniques.
The series, created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, was the perfect vehicle for his style. Farmer brought a mix of wisdom and madness that connected with a global audience. In 2023, he appeared in The Curse alongside Emma Stone, proving his rhythm fits any genre.
In 2024 he recorded episodes for the production Resident Alien, playing Dan Twelvetrees. He keeps building credits in projects that break away from the established norm. He has more than 100 titles on his official filmography across film and television since his debut in the 1980s.
Filming of his latest appearance in the series Reservation Dogs ended with a ten-hour day shooting outdoors under the Oklahoma sun.
