Martin Cummins caught the attention of the Canadian industry when he was barely twenty years old. In 1989, he landed a recurring role on the series Neon Rider, which gave him an inside look at how a professional shoot works. He wasn't chasing the quick fame of teen-drama casting calls.
He worked hard to learn the craft.
In the nineties, he moved through fantasy productions filmed in his native British Columbia. In 1996, he joined the cast of Poltergeist: The Legacy to play Nick Boyle for nearly ninety episodes. That series gave him the experience he needed to handle dense dialogue and endless waits between takes in the forests of Vancouver.
In 2000, he decided that acting was not enough and wrote the script for We All Fall Down. It was a risky personal bet in which he also served as director and lead actor. The story followed a young man struggling with the death of his mother and drug use.
And the industry took note of him.
He had a young Ryan Reynolds in the cast before he became a global Marvel star. Canadian critics praised his ability to portray the city's underworld with a rawness few expected from a television actor. He won a Genie Award for this work but chose not to rush into a career behind the camera.
The script was always his silent refuge.
But the general public mainly knows him for his roles as a serious, guarded man in long-running series. In 2011, he appeared in The Killing as Cory Petersen. His angular face and steady gaze fit perfectly with the gloomy tone of this AMC production.
In 2014 he began his journey on When Calls the Heart, playing Henry Gowen. What started as a textbook villain evolved over the years into a character full of nuance and redemption. Hallmark fans often praise his ability to convey so much with so little facial movement.
In 2017, he took on the role of Tom Keller in Riverdale. For seven seasons, he played the sheriff and father of Kevin Keller in a production that strayed far from the classic tone of the Archie comics. But Cummins kept his character dignified even when the storylines became excessively surreal.
He survived the wildest script changes.
Unlike many actors of his generation, he never moved to Los Angeles for good to chase big studio blockbusters. He prefers the stability of the Vancouver industry and shoots that keep him close to home. In 2024, he finished filming season eleven of When Calls the Heart at the Langley locations.
Production on these episodes wrapped on a tight budget, with fourteen-hour days on the Jamestown set.
