During the Civil War, Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, a decorated officer in the Union Army, receives an order from Major Fambrough: he must travel to an outpost on the edge of Indian territory to relieve the officer in command. He is accompanied only by his loyal horse, Cisco, and has no other companions on the journey. Dunbar carries out the order with discipline, but when he arrives he finds the fort has been abandoned. His goal remains to fulfill the duty he was given, even though the post is empty and no one is waiting to relieve him. Kevin Costner directs the movie and plays Dunbar, a man who faces a situation he never expected.
