Synopsis of The Boroughs

The Boroughs is a sci-fi series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews for Netflix. The story unfolds in an upscale retirement community in the middle of the New Mexico desert, where the staff seems a little too cheerful to be normal. Sam, a recently widowed aeronautical engineer, reluctantly moves in and connects with Judy, a retired journalist, and other neighbors. Together they form an unconventional group trying to keep calm in a place that is hiding something. The threat comes from another world and seeks to take what is scarcest at their age: time. Alfred Molina leads the cast alongside Alfre Woodard and Denis O'Hare.

Trivia about The Boroughs

Ben Taylor directed several episodes of the series and served as executive producer alongside The Duffer Brothers, Addiss, Matthews and Hilary Leavitt, for Upside Down Pictures.

Netflix canceled the series on June 17, 2026, after just one season.

In its first week, the series debuted in second place on Netflix's TV series chart, behind Nemesis, which had been airing for one more week.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 97% approval rating based on 69 reviews.

The soundtrack, titled The Boroughs (Soundtrack from the Netflix Series), was released on June 19, 2026.

The series was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the same city where the story is set, according to production information published by Netflix.

Before the cancellation, creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews had planned for the story to span three seasons.

Netflix even considered filming the second and third seasons back to back, and had already assembled a writers' room for a possible second season.
