Synopsis of Nurse Jackie

Jackie Peyton is an emergency room nurse at the fictional All Saints hospital in New York City. She is married to Kevin and is the mother of two daughters, but she has an affair with Eddie, the hospital pharmacist, who supplies her with pills in exchange for favors. At work she is joined by Eleanor O'Hara, a British doctor who is her best friend on the job, and Zoey, a young nursing student with no experience. Amid frantic shifts, difficult patients and unreliable colleagues, Jackie tries to keep up her job and her double life as her dependence on painkillers grows. The series, created by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem and Evan Dunsky, airs on Showtime and stars Edie Falco.

Trivia about Nurse Jackie

The series premiere was the most successful in Showtime's history, drawing one million viewers on its premiere day and more than 350,000 in its repeat airings.

In an earlier stage, the series was called Nurse Mona and was a much darker version, with vague supernatural elements.

Brixius and Wallem had written a pilot about addiction titled Insatiable for Showtime, and they were asked to rework Nurse Mona, adding more comedy.

Nurse Jackie received 24 Primetime Emmy nominations, and Falco won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010.

Jackie's addiction storyline was personal for Falco, Wallem and Brixius, all three of whom were recovering alcoholics.

Showtime renewed "Nurse Jackie" for a seventh season in March 2014 and announced months later that it would be the series' last.

In 2023, a sequel with Edie Falco was announced, originally planned for Showtime; in 2024 the project moved to Amazon Prime Video, though it did not yet have a release date.
