Laura Benanti landed her first professional audition at eighteen. It was in 1998 for a new production of The Sound of Music, and fate intervened when the lead, Rebecca Luker, had to step away due to health problems. That forced replacement put her in the spotlight of New York critics before she was old enough to drink in the bars of Times Square.
And the gamble paid off.
Before she turned twenty, she already knew what it meant to carry an entire musical on her shoulders. But success on stage is a double-edged sword that often comes with unexpected physical costs. In 2002, the success nearly ended in tragedy during rehearsals for Into the Woods.
She suffered a serious neck injury that forced her off the stage for months of uncertainty. But she came back with renewed discipline and won her first Tony Award in 2008 for her role in Gypsy. That award was the direct result of three years of physical therapy and intense vocal training.
Because the Broadway theater industry doesn't forgive moments of weakness or long absences. After her recovery, Benanti decided to diversify her sources of income and try her luck at television studios in Los Angeles. In 2011, she starred in the series The Playboy Club, but the show was canceled after only three episodes aired.
Television is a much crueler business than theater.
But her talent for physical comedy opened different doors at the national television network. In 2014, she joined the cast of Nashville, playing country singer Sadie Stone. That contract included recording several songs that reached the top spots on the country music charts.
It wasn't her usual range, but her classical technique let her adapt without straining her voice. As a result, producers began to see her as an actress capable of handling rapid-fire dialogue and frantic shooting schedules.
In 2016, her career took an unexpected turn thanks to her impression of Melania Trump on Stephen Colbert's show. It was pure gestural observation that stayed on the air for four years. Because the audience that had never set foot in a Manhattan theater began recognizing her face on social media and the news.
Then came big-budget mainstream cinema.
In 2023, she played the mother of an introverted teenager in the movie No Hard Feelings. She shared scenes with Jennifer Lawrence, and the shoot took place in various locations across Long Island during the fall. The film earned more than $87 million at the international box office that year.
In 2024, Benanti shot her final scenes for the series The Gilded Age at historic locations in New York State. The series' production design used original late nineteenth-century costumes that weighed over ten kilos per dress.
