Christian Borle is not the typical actor who waits for the camera to find him. In 1995, he finished his studies at Carnegie Mellon and jumped into the New York grind with no safety net. His first real break came with Footloose in 1998, but it was his role as Emmett Forrest in Legally Blonde that forced the industry to take him seriously.
Luck had nothing to do with it.
He worked with almost surgical precision in every gesture. Because Borle understands that musical theater isn't about hitting high notes but about telling the truth while you move. In 2012 he won his first Tony Award for Peter and the Starcatcher, playing a villain who was pure physical delirium. It wasn't just acting (it was a display of body control that left critics speechless).
The truth is, Borle prefers the sweat of rehearsal to the red carpet. For years, he grinded through Broadway stages, stacking projects that demanded superhuman energy. In 2015, he repeated his Tony feat with Something Rotten!, where his take on an egotistical, rock-star Shakespeare earned millions of dollars at the box office.
His move to mainstream television was no accident. In 2012, the series Smash put him on the global map beyond the theaters of 42 Street. He played Tom Levitt, and his chemistry with the rest of the cast carried a storyline that sometimes faltered. But he always brought exactly the right tone.
The pace was frantic.
He would work fourteen-hour days and then lock himself away to study scores. So when the time came to move into productions like The Good Wife or Masters of Sex, the switch in style didn't faze him. Borle knows the camera catches a lie long before the audience member in the last row does.
In 2017, he took on the challenge of starring in Falsettos and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory almost simultaneously. It was an effort that took a physical toll (he lost weight and had barely any social life). But the result on screen and on stage was the same as always. No one could take their eyes off him.
Over time, he began choosing his projects with a much narrower filter. He no longer needed to be everywhere. In 2022, he slipped into the costumes of Some Like It Hot to bring Joe to life, a role that required him to tap dance while keeping flawless comic timing. The production was a resounding technical success.
And then came the turn toward voice-over work.
In 2024 he voiced Vox in the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel. He plays a character who thrives on media manipulation, and Borle uses his vocal range to convey that mix of charisma and danger. The project hit No. 1 on streaming platforms in more than a dozen countries during its first week.
The series was renewed for a second season even before the final episodes of the first season aired. Borle recorded his voice sessions at a New York studio charging a flat fee per hour of recording.
