Aisha Tyler stands six foot one, and that physical presence defined her beginnings in San Francisco comedy clubs. She didn't fit the usual mold of late-1990s television. Before landing her first major role, she worked at an advertising agency but decided to leave and try her luck in acting full time.
In 2003, Tyler joined the cast of Friends to play Charlie Wheeler. It was a risky move for the production because she was the first Black character with a substantial story arc on a show criticized for its lack of diversity. She played a brilliant paleontologist who dated Joey and Ross. That contract lasted nine episodes and gave her the visibility she needed to move on to projects with greater technical prestige.
The industry didn't know what to do with her.
Her ability to speak at lightning speed earned her the host job on Talk Soup in 2001. That gig was a training ground for the sarcasm she would later bring to other formats. But her real financial stability came from her voice. In 2009, she began recording the lines of Lana Kane in the animated series Archer. She has done this work for more than fifteen seasons, and it has helped her fund her own personal projects.
In 2011, Tyler joined the debate show The Talk to replace Holly Robinson Peete. She spent six years sharing the table with Sharon Osbourne. She won a Daytime Emmy in 2017 for that work but decided to leave the set just as the show was at its highest ratings. She wanted to direct.
And she made it happen.
Her behind-the-camera debut with the feature film Axis in 2017 was funded through a crowdfunding campaign that raised thousands of dollars in just a few days. She shot the film in only nine days on a minimal budget, and much of the action takes place inside a car. She wasn't chasing a box office hit. She wanted to prove she could manage a film crew and meet the delivery deadlines that major Los Angeles studios demand.
That technical discipline opened the doors of procedural television to her. Between 2017 and 2023, she directed episodes of series such as Criminal Minds, The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. On these shoots, Tyler earned a reputation as a director who understands the needs of actors because she still stands in front of the camera herself.
In 2022, she reprised her role as Dr. Tara Lewis in Criminal Minds: Evolution. Filming for this new chapter of the franchise moved away from the classic episodic format and adopted a denser single-season structure. Tyler had to balance long outdoor shoot days with her career as a businesswoman in the beverage industry.
In 2023, she appeared in the series The Last Thing He Told Me for Apple TV+. She worked alongside Jennifer Garner in a suspense drama that had nothing to do with the comedy of her beginnings. But her main interest still lies in executive producing and having full control over the material she shoots.
Her production company is currently developing several noir scripts.
By 2024, production on the second season of Evolution took up most of her work schedule in California. The syndication deal for her earlier shows lets her choose projects without the pressure of monthly bills. Tyler uses Red Digital Cinema cameras in her independent productions to ensure 8K resolution in the final master.
