The Son-in-Law Hollywood Couldn't Forget

George Newbern joined the set of Father of the Bride in 1991 without knowing that his face would be etched into the collective imagination of a generation. He wasn't the top star on the poster, but his role as Bryan MacKenzie alongside Steve Martin gave him a direct ticket into the upper-middle class of the American film industry. That comedy did so well at the box office that it let him avoid going hungry for decades.

Before that massive success, he had already tried his luck in productions like Big City Adventures in 1987. Newbern projected that image of the nice, polite, square-jawed good guy that casting directors in the eighties were looking for. But his career didn't stop at the stereotype of the harmless leading man who asks permission to marry the star's daughter.

Anonymity is a luxury Newbern learned to manage.

By the late nineties, his presence on television had become constant. In 1998 he appeared in Friends as Danny, a neighbor who made Rachel jealous and ended up starring in one of the strangest storylines of season five, involving a relationship with her sister. It was a short arc of barely three episodes, but enough for audiences in Spain to recognize him as a familiar face during afternoon TV.

The Steel Voice and the Digital Villain

Then came the change of pace nobody saw coming on the physical screen. In 2001 Newbern inherited the Superman cape in the animated series Justice League, replacing Tim Daly. It was no easy task, because Man of Steel fans are relentless about changes in tone. Still, the actor struck a balance between the hero's moral uprightness and a vulnerability that connected with audiences over five years.

He voices Superman.

This work as a voice actor opened doors to a far more profitable and loyal sector than conventional film. In 2005 he lent his voice to Sephiroth in the English version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and reprised the role in the Kingdom Hearts video game series. His performance of the silver-haired villain is cold, distant and free of any trace of the kindness he showed in his live-action films.

Many video game fans took years to discover that the ideal son-in-law of the nineties was the same man who voiced the one-winged angel. This duality allowed him to work nonstop without suffering the wear and tear of sensationalist magazine covers. In 2011 he returned to the role of Superman for the movie Superman vs. The Elite, and experts considered the technical quality of his voice work one of the strongest of his career.

El asesino a sueldo y los años de oficio

In 2012, his big-screen career regained an energy that seemed to have gone dormant. Shonda Rhimes cast him in Scandal as Charlie, a hired killer and torture expert working for the B613 organization. The character started out on the sidelines but gained weight over time, becoming part of the main cast in the show's later seasons.

And the gamble paid off.

Newbern moved entirely away from the light of his early career to embrace a dark, cynical and at times pathetic character in his personal life. In 2018 he finished his run on the series after seven seasons of political intrigue and bloodshed in Washington. This role showed that the years had served his acting well, bringing a maturity that nineties cinema did not require of him.

But the actor never left the world of procedural series. In 2019, he appeared in an episode of The Bull, and in 2022 he showed up in the production The Winchesters. He doesn't chase the spotlight because he understands his place is in the reliability of the supporting role, the actor who never misses a take. He is an entertainment professional who has diversified his income across commercials, voice-over and cable television.

In 2023 he narrated several episodes of the documentary series Reel Rock, which is dedicated to extreme climbing. George Newbern lives in Los Angeles and has maintained an unusual stability in his line of work, married to actress Marietta DePrima since 1990. In 2024 his name continued to appear in the credits of major animated productions from Warner Bros. and DC Comics.
