Margaret Colin grew up in a Brooklyn home where order and faith set the rhythm of daily life. Her father was a New York police officer, and that discipline shaped the way she approached acting. She studied at Hofstra University and soon found work in the world of daytime soap operas in the late 1970s.
She started on The Edge of Night, playing a troubled heiress. That experience taught her that in television, time is money, and memorizing script pages at top speed is a survival skill. In 1980, she moved on to As the World Turns, and her face became a regular fixture in living rooms across half the country.
And the gamble paid off.
In the mid-1980s she decided the movies needed her presence. In 1986 she appeared in Pretty in Pink, and shortly after she shot Something Wild under the direction of Jonathan Demme. But the big commercial breakthrough came in 1987 with Three Men and a Baby. That film grossed $167 million in the United States alone and put her on the radar of Hollywood's major studios.
In 1996 she played Constance Spano in Independence Day. In this science fiction blockbuster she was the presidential adviser and the ex-wife of the character played by Jeff Goldblum. It was a restrained, professional role that avoided the damsel-in-distress cliché. The film ended the year as the highest-grossing movie worldwide.
Television gave her confidence.
Despite her success on the big screen, she never abandoned the medium that launched her career. In 2007 she accepted the role of Eleanor Waldorf in the series Gossip Girl. For six seasons she played a fashion designer from Manhattan's elite, a complex character with a strained relationship with her daughter.
This role allowed her to connect with a new generation of viewers who were unfamiliar with her earlier work in action films and police dramas. In 2012, she ended her run on the original series after filming more than 80 episodes, where her presence brought an adult weight to the youth-driven storylines.
Theater has been her constant refuge when the cameras stopped rolling. In 2012, she starred in The Columnist on Broadway, and in 2018, she took part in the prestigious production of Carousel. For Colin, the stage is where an actor regains control over their own pace without depending on the editing room.
Because steady work defines her career more than any award.
In 2021 she reprised her role as Eleanor Waldorf for a cameo in the new version of Gossip Girl produced for digital platforms. It was a nod to fans of the franchise, but her work didn't stop there. Between 2021 and 2022 she played Jane Tidwell on the series Chicago Med, appearing in several story arcs of the medical drama.
In 2023 she joined the cast of the film Three Birthdays, directed by Jane Weinstock. Filming took place on location in New York, and the plot is set against the backdrop of the protests against the Vietnam War in 1970. The production had a modest budget by American independent film standards.
