John Finn was born in the Bronx in 1952 and served in the United States Navy for several years before ever setting foot on a stage. That military edge never left his gaze. That's why Hollywood kept calling him to play cops, soldiers and men with a murky past.
In 1979 he made his television debut with a small role on B.J. and the Bear. But his face really started to register when Edward Zwick cast him as Sergeant Major Mulcahy in Glory in 1989. There he shared the screen with Denzel Washington and learned to hold his own in big-budget period productions.
John Finn is the actor everyone knows but nobody can name.
Throughout the nineties he worked tirelessly on commercially driven projects. In 1993 he appeared in The Pelican Brief, and a year later he shot Blown Away alongside Jeff Bridges. Cinema of that era needed rock-solid supporting players, and he fit the mold without breaking a sweat.
He never aimed for the top billing because he soon understood that the money was in steady work. So he specialized in roles that played off the stars of the moment. In 1997 he appeared in Turbulence and shortly after in True Crime under the direction of Clint Eastwood.
His real financial stability came in 2003 with the premiere of Cold Case. There he played Lieutenant John Stillman for seven straight seasons. It was the peak of his media exposure on CBS. And although the series ended in 2010, the shadow of that police chief followed him through nearly all of his later work.
And the bet on television paid off.
In 2016 he joined the cast of The Walking Dead as Earl Sutton. It was a change of pace he needed to get away from offices and police stations. But the authority suit always found its way back to the hanger. In 2019 he appeared in the miniseries The Loudest Voice, playing Jack Welch in a production that dissected the scandals at Fox News.
In 2020 he filmed The Way Back with Ben Affleck, playing a Catholic priest. It was one of the few times his physical presence didn't intimidate the audience. In 2021 he joined the series The Blacklist to bring Judge Richard Deever to life in several key episodes of the plot.
Her pace of work didn't slow down with age.
By 2022, he was part of the series The Crown, playing Arthur Hancock. In 2023 he stayed busy with low-budget independent productions shot mainly on the East Coast. He has more than 100 official credits on his professional profile across film and television since his debut in the 1970s. He lives in Connecticut and avoids red carpets whenever his contract allows.
