Synopsis of The Sopranos

Tony Soprano is a capo in the Italian American mafia in northern New Jersey who divides his time between his suburban home and the family business he runs. After collapsing from a panic attack, his doctor refers him to psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi. Tony, at first reluctant, begins to talk with her about his childhood, his mother Livia, whose influence still weighs on him, and his father, who was also a gangster. Meanwhile, his marriage to Carmela grows strained, and his ties to the mob become the center of his doubts. Created by David Chase and aired on HBO, the series portrays a man trying to balance crime and family life.

Trivia about The Sopranos

Prosecutor and municipal judge Robert Baer sued Chase for breach of contract, claiming he had helped create the series. He lost the lawsuit, though he did get a jury to decide how much he would be paid for his services as a location scout.
Steven Van Zandt, guitarist with the E Street Band, had never acted before. Chase wrote a new role for him because HBO wanted Tony to be played by an experienced actor.
The Simpsons parodied the opening credits in one episode. In their version, Fat Tony emerges from a tunnel in Springfield instead of Tony.
CBS accepted the robberies and the crimes, but asked whether the main character had to see a psychiatrist.
Chase wanted Michael Imperioli for his performance in Goodfellas, and picked him from several actors for the role of Christopher Moltisanti.
The pilot episode was shot in August 1997, but HBO didn't greenlight the series until December of that year, and the premiere came 18 months later; 12 months passed between the pilot and the second episode.
«The Sopranos» won 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, including the first Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for a cable production; James Gandolfini and Edie Falco each won three times as lead actors.
The most-watched episode drew 13.43 million viewers on September 15, 2002, while the series finale brought in 11.9 million on June 10, 2007.
