Lorraine Bracco was born in Brooklyn in 1954 and grew up with the raspy voice that would later earn her a living. In 1974, she moved to France to work as a model for Jean-Paul Gaultier, and spent a full decade there in the spotlight and on runways.
That European chapter cured her fear of the camera.
But she wanted to act. In 1987, she shot The Pick-up Artist and began carving out a place for herself in an industry that never quite understood her energy. She wasn't the typical delicate beauty of the eighties, and that ended up being her biggest asset in winning over casting directors.
Martin Scorsese was cast by Goodfellas in 1990. Bracco played Karen Hill with an intensity that nearly overshadowed her co-stars in every scene of screaming and excess. It was the role that pulled her out of supporting-player roles.
She received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. That 1991 ceremony confirmed that her place was in cinema's edge-of-the-line characters.
Then came the rejection of the same old roles.
Bracco began receiving dozens of scripts that only asked her to play the wife of a gangster again. She said no to almost all of them. She preferred to wait for something that demanded a different range, even if that meant working less for a while.
David Chase offered her the role of Carmela Soprano in 1998, but she flatly refused. She was tired of checkered tablecloths and guns in the kitchen drawer. Instead, she asked to play Dr. Jennifer Melfi.
It was a risky decision.
For six seasons on The Sopranos, Bracco was the perfect counterpoint to Tony Soprano. She earned close to 100,000 dollars per episode during the show's middle seasons. Audiences became obsessed with those therapy sessions where silence said more than dialogue.
But television fame comes with invisible tolls. Bracco revealed in her book On the Couch, published in 2006, that she suffered severe depression during much of the series' shoot. Playing someone so emotionally contained ended up taking a heavy toll on her private life.
In 2010, she joined the cast of Rizzoli & Isles to play Angela Rizzoli. The series ran for seven seasons on air and gave her the financial stability she used to pursue personal projects beyond straight acting.
She bought a house in Sicily for one euro in 2020. The process became a documentary series for the HGTV network titled My Big Italian Adventure, in which she was seen negotiating with bricklayers and repairing crumbling roofs. It was an unexpected ratings hit in the American market.
In 2022, she voiced Sofia the seagull in the version of Pinocchio directed by Robert Zemeckis.
The film's production cost $150 million.
