Mike Colter didn't come to Hollywood with a backup plan. After earning a theater degree from Rutgers University, he decided his six-foot-three frame would be his best working tool. In 2004, he landed the role of Big Willie Little in Million Dollar Baby, directed by Clint Eastwood.
It was his first big break.
That shoot taught him that silence communicates more than shouting. But the following years were not a smooth ride. Colter took supporting roles in series such as ER and The Parkers while waiting for a character that didn't rely solely on his physical size.
In 2010, he appeared in The Good Wife as Lemond Bishop. The character was a drug dealer with the manners of a Wall Street executive. That performance changed how casting directors saw him.
The streaming industry was looking for a face to lead the darkest corner of New York. In 2015, Colter made his debut as Luke Cage in the first season of Jessica Jones. His chemistry with Krysten Ritter and his bulletproof skin convinced Netflix to give him his own series in 2016.
The contract required extreme physical preparation to maintain muscle that would look believable on screen. Colter shot two seasons of Luke Cage and the miniseries The Defenders in 2017.
Physique Rules.
But the cancellation of Marvel's series in 2018 forced the actor to seek refuge on network television. He didn't want to be typecast in superhero roles. So he accepted the role of David Acosta in Evil in 2019.
In this Robert and Michelle King production, he plays a seminarian who investigates paranormal events. The series aired for four seasons and allowed the actor to explore a much more vulnerable and psychological side.
Colter knows that mid-budget action movies are a safe market. In 2023, he starred in Plane alongside Gerard Butler. The film earned more than $50 million at the worldwide box office with a simple, effective premise.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, it was confirmed that his character would get a sequel titled Ship. Colter now prefers projects where he has more creative control and shoots that don't drag on for six months in remote locations.
In 2024, he filmed the thriller Murder City, in which he plays a disgraced former cop. The production opted for a raw visual style and moved away from the heavy digital effects that dominated his time in the comic book universe.
For the project Monster in 2025, the actor's schedule included training sessions focused on hand-to-hand combat scenes. The film has independent financing of $15 million.
