John Benjamin Hickey was born in Plano, Texas, in 1963. He studied at Fordham University and later at Juilliard. His classical training gave him an unusual confidence when he entered the Broadway scene.
Theater was her first real refuge.
In 1995, he made his film debut with The Ice Storm. That movie, directed by Ang Lee, put him on the map for New York casting directors. But his name would take a while to reach a wider audience beyond the stage.
In 2011, he played Felix Turner in the revival of The Normal Heart. It was a physically demanding and devastating role that earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. That night, his status in the industry changed dramatically.
Hickey has always preferred characters with moral complexity. In the series The Big C, which aired between 2010 and 2013, he played Sean Tolkey, the protagonist's eccentric brother who lived in a garbage bin.
He appeared in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009. It was his first direct contact with the big-budget blockbuster world, which he didn't usually frequent. Still, his natural habitat remained character-driven drama.
One of his most memorable roles came with The Good Wife and its follow-up The Good Fight. He played Neil Gross, the head of a tech company similar to Google. The character recurred between 2011 and 2021.
His talent for playing powerful, somewhat cynical men is a constant throughout his career. In 2014, he starred in the series Manhattan, playing Frank Winter. The story centered on the development of the atomic bomb in Los Alamos.
Directing for the stage was his next logical step.
In 2022, he directed Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker in the play Plaza Suite. The production became a Broadway box office hit before moving to London in 2024. His work behind the camera was confirmed by critics.
He appeared in the new version of Gossip Girl in 2021, playing Reverend Roy Sachs. But his interest in fantasy led him to shoot Salem’s Lot in 2024. In this adaptation of Stephen King, he played Father Callahan.
Also in 2024, he worked on the science fiction thriller Subservience alongside Megan Fox. Before shooting that film, he appeared in season two of The Gilded Age, playing Luke Forte in 2023.
His contract for the British tour of Plaza Suite included a six-month technical exclusivity clause.
