He Didn't Argue… He Just Executed

New Orleans, in the midst of the financial crisis and during the 2008 presidential campaign. A robbery of an illegal poker game has shaken the city's underworld, and the mob wants to find those responsible. To do so, it turns to Jackie Cogan, a professional hitman who must act as an investigator. His goal is to track down the culprits without raising suspicion, in an environment where every conversation may hide a trap. Trivia about Killing Them Softly

The U.S. release was originally scheduled for September 21, 2012, but it was pushed back to November 30 so it would not compete with The Master and so it would have better chances at awards.

Dominik asked Brad Pitt via text message whether he was interested in the role. Pitt replied "yes," and the matter was settled in half an hour.

According to Garret Dillahunt, the first cut of the movie ran two and a half hours. Dillahunt, who had a cameo, did not make it into the final theatrical release.

The song "Windmills of Your Mind," performed by Petula Clark, appears in the movie, but it was not included on the soundtrack album.

"Killing Them Softly" competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, but it did not win any awards in the official competition.

The movie grossed approximately 37.9 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 15 million; in the United States, it earned about 14.9 million.

Its U.S. commercial release brought in about 6.8 million dollars during its opening weekend, one of the worst wide openings for Brad Pitt up to that point.

The movie was shot in New Orleans, but it keeps Boston as its reference setting, just like the George V. Higgins novel it is based on.
