The origin of a borrowed name

Ray Liotta didn't meet his biological parents until he was in his forties. He was abandoned at an orphanage in Newark, and at six months old, an Italian and Scottish family adopted him, giving him a surname that would become synonymous with crime cinema. He studied acting at the University of Miami because the program didn't require math for admission.

It was a purely pragmatic decision.

His first steady paycheck came from the soap opera Another World in the late 1970s. He spent three years learning the craft by heart before moving to Los Angeles, looking for something more than daytime television. But the jump to film wasn't immediate, and he had to wait for an old friendship to open the door to the studios.

The stare that scared Melanie Griffith

In 1986, he landed the role of Ray Sinclair in Something Wild thanks to his friend Melanie Griffith pushing the director on his behalf. Jonathan Demme was looking for someone who would be a genuine threat on screen, and Liotta delivered a magnetic psychopath that earned him a Golden Globe nomination. That professional debut shattered his good-guy image and typecast him in roles of dangerous intensity.

But his big break came when he refused to play the villain of the moment again.

He preferred to play the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams in 1989. He worked alongside Kevin Costner in a film that showed his blue eyes could convey an almost childlike vulnerability. It was the stepping stone to Martin Scorsese's call that changed his career forever.

The six months of chaos on set

Scorsese chose him to play GoodFellas in 1990 because he wanted someone who could narrate the mob's descent into hell with a mix of fascination and terror. Liotta listened to real recordings of the real Henry Hill for months to nail that very specific voice. And the gamble paid off.

The famous restaurant scene was shot in one endless take.

Liotta never worked with Scorsese again even though the film became the absolute standard for the genre. The nineties were a roller coaster of projects where he tried to step out of the gangster's shadow, without much commercial success. He shot False Seduction in 1992 and the futuristic drama Escape from Absolom in 1994, looking for a niche as an action hero that never quite caught on at the box office.

The voice of a digital generation

In 2002, he voiced Tommy Vercetti in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It was one of the first times a Hollywood star led a major digital production, and the result was a massive sales hit. That performance restored a relevance the film industry had denied him during that dry spell.

And then came Narc.

In that 2002 film, he regained his raw edge playing a corrupt, overweight cop. He had to gain more than twenty pounds for the role because he wanted to erase any trace of his earlier physical appeal. That opened the door to a mature phase of his career, where he happily took on top-tier supporting roles in films like Killing Them Softly and the series Shades of Blue alongside Jennifer Lopez.

His Final Act in the Caribbean

During 2019, he appeared in Marriage Story, playing an aggressive lawyer who recalled his best days of stage intensity. His return to the Soprano universe in 2021 with The Many Saints of Newark allowed him to play a dual role that came full circle with his past in New York mob films.

He died in his sleep on May 26, 2022.

He was in the Dominican Republic filming Dangerous Waters. His remains were transported to the United States after it was confirmed that his death was due to natural causes related to heart failure and pulmonary edema. The production of Cocaine Bear in 2023 premiered posthumously, with a special dedication in the closing credits.
